Horse Breeds

A list of the breeds magnificent animals.

1

Gypsy Vanner

Gypsy Vanner

The Gypsy Horse has feathering on its legs.

Just like the larger Clydesdales and Shires, the Gypsy Horse is known for having feathering on its lower legs. Some Gypsy Horses, however, can compete in the size category with the other feathered breeds. In the US, there are two sectional classifications for purebred horses: one for those under 14.2 hands and the other for horses taller than that. In The Netherlands, there is a third category, the “vanner,” that registers horses which are 15.1-16.2 hands tall.

2

Appaloosa

Appaloosa

Some Appaloosas do not display characteristics typical of the breed, including the unique and colorful coat patterns. Solid colored horses are blood typed to verify Appaloosa parentage if they are raced, shown, or bred.

3

American Quarter

American Quarter

The American Quarter Horse is highly adaptable.

This breed of horse is willing to take on any and all training tasks. It easily adapts to new and changing situations as well. This makes the breed well-suited for everything from shows and competition to working as part of a mounted police patrol.

4

Percheron

Percheron

This breed was first used for raiding and war.
Percherons started to be shipped to the USA in the early 1800s.
After World War 2, the Percheron population decreased in the USA so that by 1954, only 500 had been recorded.

5

Clydesdales

Clydesdales

One of the largest horses in history is a Clydesdale.

There is a Clydesdale named Poe who lives in Ontario, Canada who stands at 20.2 hands in height. He weighs in at an impressive 3,000 pounds. That’s just 0.3 hands off of what is currently considered to be the world record for the tallest living horse.

6

Arabian

Arabian

All Arabian horses have black skin underneath their coats, except underneath any white hair. When these horses lived in the desert, the black skin would help to protect them from the hot sun.

7

Thoroughbred

Thoroughbred

Not only do they kick butt in racing, but Thoroughbreds can be seen excelling across a variety of sports. Eventing, show jumping, dressage, barrel racing and polo all have Thoroughbreds competing at the highest international levels.
