Like many adults you may be self-conscious of your teeth and try to draw as little attention to your smile as you can. However wouldn’t it be nice to smile without a worry? Advanced teeth straightening methods offer impressive results for people who want to fix problems with their teeth whilst looking to smile confidently. Though as an investment in you it’s best to make sure you know about your options and what's involved. Here are some of our FAQS to help you:

Am I too old for teeth straightening treatment?

Am I too old for teeth straightening treatment?

Creating a straighter, beautiful smile can be achieved at any age, it’s not just for teenagers! Orthodontic treatments are becoming much more popular among adults, and there are now multiple options to help you achieve the results you want more discreetly and conveniently than before.

2

What are the best options for straightening teeth?

This all depends on your individual circumstances and the results you want to achieve. At Oldham Orthodontics we offer a wide range of teeth straightening treatments, from traditional metal braces with predictable results, to subtler options such as ceramic braces and lingual braces; removable teeth straightening treatment such as clear aligners, and other treatments for more severe cases. You can find out more about the most suitable options for straightening teeth here.

3

Do I need a referral?

No, you don’t need a referral to see an orthodontist. All you need to do arrange for an appointment!

4

Will I need to have teeth removed?

This all depends upon the severity of your case and the method of treatment you choose. In some circumstances it is necessary to remove teeth for the best outcome, however at Oldham Orthodontics we try to avoid removing teeth wherever possible.

5

Does teeth straightening hurt?

Modern teeth straightening treatments have become much more comfortable and easier to wear. In the early stages you may feel some tenderness or discomfort, but pain is usually mild and as you adapt to your treatment this generally passes.

6

How noticeable will the treatment be?

How noticeable will the treatment be?

If you’re put off by the thought of being seen in bulky metal braces, you’re in luck. Nowadays there are a number of discreet teeth straightening solutions which might not even be noticeable to the public eye. Ceramic braces for instance, use natural tooth-coloured or clear brackets to subtly blend in with the teeth. Popular among adults, treatments such as lingual braces and clear aligners are virtually invisible and offer proven effective results.

7

Will I need to avoid certain foods?

Once your chosen option has been fitted, we can review the types of foods that you might want to avoid. If you’re wearing braces you may want to avoid certain foods which could damage to your braces or cause you discomfort. However with clear aligner treatments such as Invisalign, you will be able to eat and drink the things you’d normally enjoy so they can offer you greater flexibility.

8

How long does teeth straightening take?

The length of treatment varies widely depending on a number of factors. You’ll need to take into account things like the severity of the problem, your age, your ability to stick to appointments and your commitment to keeping up a good oral healthcare routine. On average and depending on the method, it could take anywhere from 6-24 months. However the final results will be worth the effort!

9

Will I need a retainer?

In most cases, wearing a retainer after treatment will help to keep the teeth in a straight position and reduce the likelihood of them moving back to their original position. Retainers can be fixed or removable and are custom-made to precisely fit the new shapes of your teeth, to maintain their positions.

10

How much will it cost?

Our teeth straightening treatments start from £800.00, however we can provide you with a more accurate cost estimate in your consultation. Our team will thoroughly discuss the options available to you and work out payment to suit your needs. For more information, please call our practice in Oldham on 0161 622 0987.
