Jayalalithaa was born on Feb 24, 1948, at Melukote, in Pandavapura taluka of then Mysore to Jayaram and Vedavallli in a Tamil Iyengar Family. A distinction she serves with several others. When she became Chief Minister, she was given a cheque as her first salary. She said she had “abundant sources of income and did not need the salary.” On being told that she should receive salary as a public servant, she accepted Re 1 as salary.
Jayalalithaa’s maiden speech in the Parliament in 1984 a big spectacle, so much that Indira Gandhi came to Rajya Sabha to hear her speech.
Jayalalitha financially helped a young gardener to pursue his studies, he scored very well in 10th standard, but quit on money issues. He completed his studies in a reputed Engineering college in Madurai with specification in Computer Science.Today, he is working for Amazon (One of the world’s best company with revenue US $ 24.509 billion (2009)).
She’s on record as saying that she used to go for matches with her binoculars “just to look at Pataudi and Pataudi alone.” She also had a crush on Nari Contractor, and collected photographs of Rock Hudson.
Jayalalithaa learnt Bharatanatyam when she was just 3. She also has proficiency in Mohini Attam, Manipuri and Kathak. she also use to choreograph various classical dance Dramas. She had prepared a very ambitious dance drama named Kaveri Thantha Kalaichchelvi, which was so popular that she had invitations to perform it from all over the world.
In Bangalore Jayalalithaa attended Bishop Cotton Girls’ High School and later completed her childhood education at Sacred Heart Matriculation School in Chennai. Jayalalithaa excelled at school and won Gold State Award for coming first in 10th standard in her school and also in Tamil Nadu and she was offered a government scholarship for pursuing further education.
It is said that, she is the record holder for having been the Tamil actress with maximum number of 80 silver jubilee Tamil films hits in her career. Jayalalitha also has 28 silver jubilee hits films in Telugu. Her one film in Hindi ‘Izzat’, with actor Dharmendra, was a hit, too.
The AIADMK chief is a voracious reader and has a large private library with a huge collection of books. Her favorite authors are Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw. Also Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel, Pearl S Buck and James Hadley Chase. Even as an actress, she would always carry books with her to the studio, and would sit quietly by herself in a corner and read between shots.
Not only she governs, she is a good writer in Tamil – authored at least one novel. Was a regular writer in the yesteryear Tamil weekly by name “Thai”.
