Popular Surfing Spots in Sri Lanka – The Best Places to Ride the Waves

The tropical island nation of Sri Lanka is known for its gorgeous golden sandy beaches. These beaches are suitable for almost any kind of beach activity, including surfing!

1

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is considered to be the surfing capital of Sri Lanka. Located along the southeastern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is home to one of the finest beaches in Sri Lanka. The beach is a golden sandy stretch that spreads undisturbed over a great distance. While the beach itself is amazing, so are the waves! Arugam Bay offers some great reef break waves for surfing, and promises a whole lot of action. Arugam Bay is ideally suited for intermediate surfers as the swells can be a bit challenging, but beginners can try surfing too, provided that the conditions allow it. Arugam Bay is also the site of several regional surfing competitions. Whiskey Point, located just 12km out of Arugam Bay, is also a very popular surfing destination.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa

Before Arugam Bay took over as being the surfing hot spot in Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa held the title of being the surfing capital. Although it no longer is the surfing capital, Hikkaduwa offers some great surfing experiences. Hikkaduwa's pristine stretch of golden sandy beach has many great spots to rip through the waves. The ideal season for visiting Hikkaduwa for surfing is in the months of November through April where reef break swells over 5ft barrel down the waters. With its laid back lifestyle, beautiful beach, and awesome swells, Hikkaduwa is definitely worth checking out.

Madiha

Madiha

Madiha isn't as popular in terms of tourism when compared to Hikkaduwa or Arugam Bay, but what it lacks in tourism it makes up for in amazing waves and swells. Madiha is located in the South of Sri Lanka, a few kilometers from Dondra Point, and is rapidly becoming popular as one of Sri Lanka's best locations to surf. The waves at Madiha are typical reef break waves which break both right and left. The waves average about 5ft – 6ft during the peak season. The waves here should only be surfed by surfers with some experience under their belts. Madiha is also home to a local surf club that has surfing equipment as well. All in all, one can expect an exciting experience while surfing the waters of Madiha. A great way to get about while in Sri Lanka is to use the Air Taxi in Sri Lanka which is operated locally by Cinnamon Air.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna

Located a few kilometers from Hikkaduwa is the resort town of Unawatuna. Unawatuna is a highly popular coastal destination as the beautiful beach and warm blue waters make excellent conditions for spending countless hours outdoors on the beach or in the waters. During the peak season Unawatuna experiences some great swells ranking amongst the best in Sri Lanka. The powerful left hand reef break waves are known for their speed and intensity, providing for some adrenaline pumping surfing action. Naturally, this means that Unawatuna should be conquered only by veteran surfers who have significant experience. So if you are a pro at surfing, head on over to Unawatuna and ride the currents!

Pasikudah

Pasikudah

All the way in the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka is Pasikudah. Pasikudah is one of the most beautiful coastal destinations in Sri Lanka owing to its pristine conditions and awe-inspiring white sandy beach. During the off season Pasikudah is considered to be one of the calmest beaches, but during the peak season – December to February – the beach is perfect for surfing. Many locals and tourists take to the waters during this season to ride the speeding waves and perform all sorts of tricks and stunts. It really is a great place to surf!
