The Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth Relic is a temple located within the ancient Royal Palace. The place houses a tooth relic of the Buddha and is one of the country's most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The temple is a beautiful environ to explore from the incense filled interiors of the main prayer rooms to the vintage museum where an ancient and revered tusker is kept forever immortal. The annual Dalada Perahera, a glamorous parade takes place in the months of August when the temples magnificent tusker transports the sacred relic across the streets of Kandy. A famous event inundated with much glitz and the presence of ancient aristocrats, the parade is not to be missed when touring Sri Lanka in August.

The famous and historical Kandy Lake takes precedence in the city; all life is centred around the breezy confines of the Kandy Lake which sits in front of the Dalada Maligawa. There is an underground tunnel leading to a sheltered pool around the lake from the palace and it is believed that the royal women used this means for getting to the lake for a bath. It is traditional to buy popcorn from the street sellers and feed the abundance of fish thriving within the lake; while the place is favoured by locals and visitors as a charming environ around which to rest and relax.

Tipped to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Asia, the Victoria Golf and Country Club is close to Mountbatten Bungalow, part of Theme Resorts & Spas. It is the ideal place to set off to for an enjoyable game of old fashioned golf, after enjoying the relaxing confines of colonial type bungalows in Kandy. This ancient course was established in 1893. Making it to the top 100 golf courses in the Golfers Digest magazine, the 500-acre lush estate is more than just a 'golf green'; the place is home to a traditional clubhouse and offers nature lovers a chance to encounter a fascinating collection of wildlife and birds.

The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens are just minutes from the city centre and is well known for its huge collection of indigenous plants, trees and herbs. Spread across the 147 acres of parkland, are over 4,000 varieties of plants, making the gardens the best place to observe local vegetation. The historic gardens date back to the year 1371 when a temple was first erected at the site. It was in 1821 that Alexander Moon established the place as a park. The gardens are a beautiful haven across which the mighty Mahaweli River – the largest in the country, flows.
