Sri Lanka's beaches are spread across the island and all of them are unique and striking. Listing the best is almost impossible since they are all special in their own way.

Hikkaduwa Beach

If you are on a quest to exploring Sri Lanka's beaches, then Hikkaduwa should be on the top of your list. There is no better place in this paradise isle to enjoy the sunny side of life than on the 'Hikka' beach. Whether you are looking to sunbathe, scuba dive, surf, snorkel or go on boat rides this is one of the top beaches in the southern coastal belt. The town of Hikkaduwa is just minutes away from the beach so any type of swimwear or equipment can be easily purchased. Since tourism is no stranger to this laid-back seaside town you can easily find your way through the ever-hospitable local community. Travelling to Hikkaduwa beach from the Colombo will only take one and a half hours on the Southern expressway. November to April are the peak months of the year. Finding accommodation is nothing to worry about since, in Sri Lanka, hotels are available in plenty.

Arugam Bay

The Arugam Bay beach is one of the most famous surfing spots in the world. Many surfers take base in Arugam Bay during April to October. This is when the waves rise up to five to ten meters in height depending on the ocean's condition. Many professional surfers are seen in Arugam Bay and those who understand the beauty and the importance of the beach, treasure it. One of the main livelihoods of locals living in the area is fishing, so you get fishing boats lined up on the beach. Watching the fishermen returning home after a busy day in the ocean is another fascinating attraction of the place.

Negombo beach

A short drive from the city of Colombo will take you to this very interesting beach town. Breathtaking sunsets, soothing strolls on the beach, friendly locals, souvenir shops and luxurious Jetwing Hotels are all part of the package when staying in Negombo. If you are looking for a beach close to Katunayake then Negombo is your best pick since its just minutes away from the Bandaranaike International Airport. Kite surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are popular activities here at the Negombo beach so the drive is definitely going to be worth it!

Galle Face Green

If you are in Colombo and has an urge to go to the beach – then Galle Face Green is always there to the rescue. You may not be able to swim here since the tide is too strong but there's plenty more things you can enjoy on the shore. Kite flying, playing football, picnicking and a simple stroll are all part of the Galle Face experience in Sri Lanka. There are plenty of food vendors here selling the best street food in town. This area is usually brimming with people who are looking to relax in the evening after a busy day.

Passikudah Bay and Kalkudah beach

Located on the East Coast of the country – Passikudah is one of the most scenic beaches of sunny Sri Lanka. The Passikudah Bay is nestled on the north of Batticaloa along the Kalkudah beach. This is one of the most picturesque and safest beaches to swim in the country. The ocean waves of Passikudah and Kalkudah are a lot calmer than their counterparts in the east coast. At dawn you see fishermen returning to shore with the day's catch and you find vendors from around the island gathering hands for the best buys. September is considered the best time for surfing and windsurfing in Kalkudah.
