The locally constructed catamarans are an integral part of traditional fishing in Negombo. These vessels leave at dawn and return at sunset. Snapping up the simple crafts with their sails in full swing across the backdrop of the Indian Ocean is quite a reward. So, take along the cameras folks and head to the nearest beach for snapping up these traditional vessels as they bob on the ocean. Make it in time for the return trip at sunset and you will be rewarded with photos of a fiery sky and the silhouette of a catamaran on a rolling sea.

The fishing culture of Negombo is its most iconic feature and savouring a stint at the traditional fish market is quite a treat for loads of local flavour. Daily catches are brought in to be auctioned off at the fish market and it is the best place to purchase a variety of fresh fish at reasonable prices. Arankele is home to a lovely 6th century cave hermitage that sits at the top of a forest covered hill.
