Old City Hall

The Old City Hall is an intriguing attraction that will catch the eye of the sightseer. This historic building was constructed as long ago as 1865, during the period of British colonialism. You will notice some antique trucks in the premises as well as some equipment belonging to the municipal authorities in the galleries on the bottom floor. Make it a point to request the attendants to escort you along the antique mahogany stairway to the upper level, which they will do for a small tip; you will find a surprise in the former council chambers. Here you will find reproductions of the initial group of councillors who held office in the year 1906.

On the other hand, it is more crowded on weekends when people of all ages congregate on the Green to enjoy their leisure time. When on the lookout for 5 star hotels in Colombo, from which Galle Face Green can be easily visited, one option would be the soon to be opened Shangri-La One Galle Face.

Dutch Period Museum

Sightseers should not omit to visit this remarkable establishment that always makes an impression on the visitor. This one of a kind museum is housed within a suitably historic building, as this handsome structure was once the residence of a Dutch Governor of the 17th century. You will see that this impressive mansion is an interesting place to explore, with an attractive garden within the courtyard. As you might expect you will find an array of interesting exhibits here dating from the period of Dutch colonialism. A highlight would be the collection of colonial era furniture which will catch the eye of the sightseer.

Viharamahadevi Park

This attractive park has the distinction of being Colombo's largest area of parkland. A much-admired aspect of this splendid park is the collection of picturesque trees, particularly those which produce attractive flowers. These trees make an appealing sight when they come into bloom in the months of March through May. In recent years Viharamahadevi Park has been meticulously refurbished with newly installed benches, walkways, playgrounds and attractive landscaping. Interestingly you will find that numerous elephants brought to this part of the city for various ceremonies are kept at this park for the night.
