Yala is Sri Lanka's largest national park; also home to one of the largest convergences of leopard in Asia. The bio-diverse environs are so stunning and varied that it is as exotic as the wildlife.
The name Sithulpauwwa translates to 'hill of the quiet mind'; it certainly is a serene enclave home to an ancient rock temple. The place is a revered pilgrimage site which in days of yore housed over 12,000 monks. A must visit site for traditional culture and religious significance.
This famous site is found towards the south of Sithulpauwwa. It is a cherished site which is believed to be the location that King Kavan Tissa married the revered Vihara Maha Devi princess. If touring either one of these sites it is well worth pairing up the two for a thorough dose of Sri Lanka's ancient historical facts and traditional culture.
Much of Yala's coastal plains are restricted to people in order to protect the delicate balance of nature and wildlife. There are over 90 species of water birds that grace the wetlands of Yala; many of these are migratory and quite a treat to observe. Look out for water ducks, garganey, lesser whistling duck and many more. Apart from these the forest birds provide loads of colour and interesting behaviour to observe. The variety of birds if stupendous and quite a treat to avid bird watchers; so take along the cameras and binoculars folks for this is one experience well worth capturing.
