Choiceworks

The Choiceworks app is an essential learning tool for helping children complete daily routines (morning, day, & night), understand & control their feelings and improve their waiting skills (taking turns and not interrupting). Created with the support of leading hospitals and child development specialists, this app is designed for caregivers to provide clear and consistent support to foster a child’s independence, positive behavior, and emotional regulation at home and in the community. It can also be customized for teachers in a school setting.

Key Features
■ Three boards: Schedule, Waiting, and Feelings
■ Three Companion Books supporting each board
■ Image Library preloaded with over 180 images and audio
■ Add your own images and record your own audio for limitless customizability
■ Attach video to any board image
■ Easily create profiles to personalize and manage multiple users
■ Save an unlimited number of boards for multiple children or different routines
■ Speaks boards out loud with professionally recorded audio
■ Time saving essentials like search and auto-save
■ Share boards by Email or iTunes File Sharing with other Choiceworks app users
■ Ability to print boards or save as PDF

Schedule Board
The Schedule Board focuses on making task completion easier and more fun, allowing the user to select up to five steps on iPhone, seven on iPhone 5 and eight on iPad that can be easily reordered. The schedule is then paired with an all done column to check off steps toward a motivating reward. As the task image slides to the all done column, the user gets both visual and audio confirmation. Schedules can be enhanced by adding a timer. The schedules are easy to edit and fully customizable. Once you have created a schedule, it will be saved automatically.

Waiting Board
The Waiting Board is a great way to teach waiting skills like taking turns and/or not interrupting. The user can begin by reading the companion book, When Do I Have to Wait?, in order to explain to the child the reason why everyone has to wait on occasion. Using the waiting board, the top picture can be selected to indicate the reason why the child will be waiting and a timer can be set to show how long the child will be waiting. Next, both the user and the child can select an activity for the child to do while waiting.

Feelings Board
The Feelings Board provides a tool for helping children understand and express emotions. The user can begin by reading the companion book, When I Get Upset, to provide an example of how the child might recognize an emotion and choose a coping strategy. On the Feelings Board, the user can then help the child indicate how they are feeling from a range of options, select a coping strategy, and then request an activity which would likely help them feel better or re-engage with others.

Profiles
Supporting multiple children is effortless with Profiles. When using profiles, the app automatically organizes boards by child and encourages independence by removing the distraction of other children's boards. Personalize each profile with a name and custom photo.

Image Library
The Image Library comes preloaded with over 180 of Bee Visual’s most commonly used images, each with professionally recorded audio. You can access the images quickly using the search feature or simply by scrolling through the images. Users can add to the Image Library by selecting an image from their own camera roll or by taking a photo. The user can then add a caption and record the audio. The images can be defined as a Schedule Board Title, a Task or an Activity, a Waiting Board Skill or Activity, and/or a Feelings Board Activity. This allows only the images you want to use in those categories to be viewed when you are editing and customizing the boards.

Mirror Exercises - SLP

This is app is used by our speech and language pathologists.

Mirror Exercises
Many kids with articulation problems don’t understand how to move their mouths to make sounds correctly. Speaking in front of a mirror can help a child to see how her mouth moves when she makes particular sounds. You can articulate each sound slowly and correctly to model proper positioning for your child and demonstrate the differences in the mirror.

Notability

Notability is a digital note taking app. Among its many features, students can handwrite or type, add in photos, webclips, or draw themselves. Teachers can create a PDF’s and students can upload them to work on or they can start a note from scratch. Students can become very hands on with Notability, utliizing their zoom feature to help them when writing and can even include verbal comments on their documents.. Notability integrates with both Dropbox and Google Drive. Notability, in my opinion, is the best note taking app out there for students.

Speech Journal

Speech Journal is a customizable voice recorder that you pair recorded messages with your own imported images and image sequences. Uses for Speech Journal include: – Customized picture sequences – Multi-step picture schedules – Multi-step directions – Articulation drill and carryover – Expressive language exercises – Individualized social stories – Sample conversations

Anger Thermometer

Everyone feels angry sometimes, but many people struggle to express their anger in healthy ways. The Anger Thermometer App teaches people how to identify, understand, and control their feelings and emotions. Using the Anger Thermometer can help people to:

  • Identify how they are feeling,
  • Understand the signs of becoming angry (i.e., moving ‘up’ the thermometer), and
  • Use coping strategies to reduce their anger (i.e., move ‘down’ the thermometer). For example, if a person recognizes that s/he is feeling angry (red level), the person can use a strategy to reduce the anger and move into a calmer mood (green level).
Proloquo2Go - Symbol-based AAC

Proloquo2Go is used by people with autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other diagnoses. It is available in English, Spanish and French, including regional and bilingual support.

Using iCloud, you can even shoot the picture on your iPhone, and finish editing on your iPad or Mac. All of this in an elegant and intuitive user experience.

Prizmo is made for everyone, and is thus fully compatible with VoiceOver. It provides voice guidance to help position your iPhone when taking document pictures, and will find the text orientation automatically if it's turned left, right or upside down. Prizmo's quick capture mode provides a fast path from picture to speech synthesis for an improved workflow, and it provides a high-quality voice reader (individual voices available as in-app purchases).

Calm Talk

In this recent update children can now express positive feelings of when they are happy or calm. They also have the power to type in their own feelings.
Children swipe to the left or right to match feelings and situations together.
Older children practice their reading skills as they view all of the different options. Younger children will need support to read.

Research states that water is calming for a child's sensory system, so we have added a water timer. Rain droplets drip into a creek for one minute.
The water timer can be used:
• To help children wait for their turn
• To calm down after a tantrum or meltdown
• As a stress management tool, children practise deep breathing as they watch the water rise.

• To practice focus and attention skills
• To prepare children for a new activity to begin, or an activity to end. " When the water reaches the top, it's time to stop watching television.”
• Independently by the child

A better understanding of time can relieve a child’s stress and anxiety, helping to make playing and learning more enjoyable.

A tool to help parents and therapists with their children’s behaviour. Developed from research with therapists, parents and children.
From the eyes of a child:
“Expressing my feelings is hard for me,
Sometimes things don’t go my way,
and I don’t know what to say.
Help me to practice talking about my feelings,
play with me in the spinning feelings game,
help me to learn that peoples feelings aren’t all the same.
Tell me stories,
in real situations, in real life.

I press the picture and it talks for me,
Watch me,
Do you understand why I feel this way?

Sometimes things are too loud for me,
Sometimes I can’t make you see, what I can see,
I don’t like it when you change things without telling me.
Sometimes you tell me that I am wrong,
I don’t know how to tell my mind to be strong.

Calm talk games help me to take a break,
I listen to sounds down by the lake.
I pop bubbles to calm my mind.
I learn how to stop, breathe and count to 5.
I feel calmer, when I go to sleep at night
and mum turns out the light."

Features:

• Simple Assisted Augmentative Communication (AAC). Children press speak all button, and it sequences words into sentences.
• Colours to sort categories in AAC

• Spinning arrow. Children tap on feeling picture and it gives them a voice.

• Simple pictures

• Calming music with photographs
• Interactive balloon. (Developing self control skills).
• Different drawing backgrounds for self-expression

• Interactive water play with croaking frog.

• Imitation bubble wrap for popping

• Voice recorder and email button. Child must hold button down while they talk.
• Tap and talk for iPhone and iPad.
• Drag and Drop for iPad.

Calm Counter Social Story & Anger Management Tool

Calm Counter is a visual and audio tool to help people calm down when they are angry or anxious. The app includes a social story about anger, and audio/visual tools for calming down.

The app opens up to a “I need a break screen” that vocalizes “I need a break” when it is tapped. The screen then transitions to a red screen with an angry face and the number ten. With each tap the screen transitions to a calmer face and color. In this way, the app prompts the user to count backwards from ten followed by a deep breath.

The app also includes a simple social story with line drawings about anger. The social story talks about feeling angry and things you can do, like counting to ten, breathing deeply and taking a break, to calm yourself down.

The settings screen allows you to choose from male, female or no vocals for counting back from ten and for reading the social story out loud.

Positive Penguins

Positive Penguins app is a resilience-building app for all children.

The app has a simple 5-minute guided meditation for children to learn to sit, relax and let go of the thoughts as they come into their heads.

There is also a strategy for children to understand that an event or situation happened that created an emotion in them - this emotion is not right or wrong, rather information – once they understand this and can examine the thoughts or stories they are telling themselves about situations they can then challenge the stories they tell themselves and help problem solve situations.

We may not choose our initial emotional response to an event, but we do choose the thoughts and stories we tell ourselves and we do choose our behaviour. The app is designed to help children understand why they feel a certain feeling and behave in productive way.

The app has full sound and also text and ability to record responses rather than type if preferred.

There is a game mode just for some fun.

This resilience strategy is based on the idea that negative thoughts or the negative stories we tell ourselves are not wrong - but sometimes they are not true. Kids need to learn to catch the negative thinking that is stressful, challenge the thinking and if needed change their thinking to be more optimistic and less anxious.

This strategy is great for adults too.

The four positive penguins take you on an interactive journey to help you understand that feelings arise from your thinking and if you challenge your negative thoughts successfully you may be able to see things in a more realistic and even optimistic way.

See Positive Penguins on Facebook or our website for further information and resources

  • "No other literacy apps are this comprehensive." - Teachers With Apps
  • "WOW!!!! I found my miracle app" - Speech Language Neighborhood
  • Academics' Choice Award

Simplex Spelling is one of the best ways to improve English spelling and reading skills. Using a powerful combination of phonics lessons, spelling/word patterns, syllabication, our unique “reverse phonics” (phonics encoding) approach and contextually relevant spelling rules.

Teaching over a year of spelling curriculum with more than 650 high frequency words divided into 54 lists that are organized by spelling patterns and difficulty levels. Each of the 54 lists comes with a lesson that teaches one of the basic building blocks of spelling in the English language. These basic building blocks include syllables, sounds, spelling rules and some of the more advanced English phonograms.

Our spelling lists focus on some of the highest frequency words in the English language to help students establish a base foundation of literacy and confidence with spelling and reading.

Students learn a new concept for each lesson building on the skills learned from previous lessons and those covered in Simplex Spelling Phonics 1. Our “reverse phonics” hint feature breaks each word down into individual phonemes to improve phonemic awareness, a critical skill in achieving literacy.

One of the main areas of focus in Simplex Spelling Phonics 2 is on syllables and how they affect the way we speak, read and spell. Every word is broken down into its syllables both visually and auditorily to help students build phonological awareness skills. Many lessons teach the concepts of open and closed syllables, compound words, the rules governing vowels in syllables and syllable stresses. The stress on each syllable is subtly conveyed with every word to help students understand how the stress on a syllable affects the way words are pronounced and spelled. The schwa sound and its occurrence in English words is also taught.

Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 - English

Simplex Spelling improves English spelling and reading skills by using a powerful combination of phonics lessons, spelling/word patterns, our unique “reverse phonics” approach and contextually relevant spelling rules.

Teaches a full year of spelling curriculum with over 450 high frequency words divided into 42 lists that are organized by spelling patterns and difficulty levels. Each of the 42 lists comes with a lesson that teaches one of the basic building blocks of spelling in the English language. These basic building blocks include the different phonograms, sounds, and spelling rules.

The Simplex Spelling educational methodology has been validated by an academic study that showed an average spelling improvement of 1.9 grades among children in a classroom setting who regularly used it over a 18 week period.

Our spelling lists focus on some of the highest frequency words in the English language to help students establish a base foundation of literacy and confidence with spelling and reading.

Students learn a new concept for each lesson building on the skills learned from previous lessons. Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 guides the student and acts as a personal spelling coach with every word, while teaching "how to spell" English words.

Memorization may be sufficient to pass a spelling test, but it often does not transfer into good long term reading and spelling skills. Our goal with Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 is to not only teach a list of words, but to teach students “how to spell” these words, thus building long term skills that can be used for over 84% of the words in the English language that follow phonetic patterns.

Many studies show that students who learn to read through phonics have a higher level of literacy than students who learn to read by using flash cards and the whole word approach. Also that not all readers are good spellers, but almost all good spellers are also good readers. This is why Simplex Spelling's comprehensive unique phonics approach to spelling really works to create both better spellers and better readers.

Note: All text and voice is entirely in English.

Note: You can not create your own spelling lists.

Popplet

Popplet

This graphic organizer app for the iPad and web helps students brainstorm and organize their ideas. This is an especially great tool for visual learners. Students can use it to plan their writing or to take notes on a topic. Reviewers love this app for its simplicity and ease of use. Key features include creating unlimited local Popplet boards; taking notes with text, images, or a drawing tool; and sharing your Popplet board as a PDF or JPEG.

Noteshelf

Noteshelf offers one of the best experiences. The app supports the Apple Pencil and offers integration with Spotlight on iOS so you can quickly find different documents and notebooks. Unfortunately, there’s no way to search within handwritten notes like with Penultimate and GoodNotes.

One nice feature of Noteshelf, however, is that you can add a passcode to protect important and sensitive notes, much like what Apple added to its Notes app with iOS 9.3.

Noteshelf prides itself as the best note-taking app that offers the most beautiful handwriting effect – this is one of the key reasons why our users fall in love with Noteshelf. It perfectly mimics that intuitive ink-on-paper feeling so smoothly, it’s as if you’re using a real pen and paper.
