Promising Practice Inventory

I chose to incorporate my Promising Practices Inventory into my work here at NM State with the team I coach. There is no doubt I am truly blessed to be coaching the sport I love at the level I am. These girls know how to play soccer and they understand the game very well, so I decided to take it another step farther than the playing field. I question them to find their WHY and their PURPOSE not only in soccer but in life. Understanding the purpose to why you do the things you do can create a new vision on life. The four content areas I have listed: Ted Talks, Tony Robbins, The Player’s Tribune, and Motivation4Athlete are all resources that can contribute to the mental growth of my athletes.

  • Ted talks and Tony Robbins o Content Focus Area – These resources focus on an offering very insightful advice on experiences from life events that changed the lives of people all over the world. The main purpose is to help engage the listeners through inspirational stories, and to make an impact that can better the individual for their future. The topics searched are chosen by the individual seeking the information. o Technology Tool and Education – Using video resources such as YouTube, Netflix, and Google.
  • The Players Tribune o Content Focus Area – This website is a personal insight to stories about professional athletes and their life at that level. We used an article on a running back in the NFL who was talking about overcoming adversity in the middle of the season. His team wasn’t winning, but he talked about his perception to keep moving forward and focusing on what he had control over which was his body and his mind. He focused on what he had to do to be better to help his team be better. That there is a mindset of a champion. He wanted to win for his team. His will to succeed and mindset to persevere is commendable at any level. We used this article to motivate and hopefully inspire our girls to keep moving forward and properly deal with setbacks.
  • Motivation4Athlete o One of the first things you see when you get to this website is “Helping athletes and coaches become inspired to give a little EXTRA and go from ordinary to EXTRAordinary!” Reading this, I thought YES! Not only are they targeting the athlete but also the coach. There are different tabs that offer quotes, goal setting, stories, and mental toughness. This resource is also effective in offering the ability to subscribe to daily reminders.

Achieving goals is not a matter of having “discipline”. It’s a matter of motivating yourself, and keeping your focus on your goal. Follow these tips, or any combination of them that works for you, and you should have the motivation and focus you need.
