How Important is Morale?

How Important is Morale?

There’s something going on at your office, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. Employees used to flock to the water cooler to talk after every weekend, but now it seems like people rarely get together to talk. There used to be a creative and almost fun energy to the office that flowed through every cubicle, but now things seem a bit less exciting.

If you’re feeling a change in the mood around the office, it’s because of employee morale. Employee morale is one of the most important, and often overlooked, asset employers have. If you have an office full of happy and engaged employees, you’re going to produce stellar work and have happy clients. If your office is full of employees that seem uninspired and listless, you aren’t going to have work that produces results. Maybe there have been a few layoffs or a few popular employees may have jumped ship. A difficult client could be causing trouble for employees and making the job difficult. Either way you have a morale problem, and you need to fix it fast. If you want to see more smiling faces around the office, try these tips

Talk about the good

Talk about the good

Things may be a bit bleak at the office, but there has to be a ray of sunshine hidden behind those clouds. Have you recently closed a deal with a big name client? Are you bringing on a new employee that has a high level of expertise in an important area? Did you get new chairs for the breakroom? Sometimes any shred of good news can do wonders for employees that need a bit of a pick me up.

Ask for feedback

Ask for feedback

Your employees are clearly unhappy. Have you asked them why? Simply sending out an anonymous survey can help people vent their feelings about important issues, and can give you valuable feedback about employee issues. They may be worried about the stability of the company, or they could feel like they don’t see a future there. Either way, find out!

Get rid of the problem employees

Get rid of the problem employees

By problem employees, we don’t mean people that have the gaul to be unhappy at work. We’re talking about the manager everyone hates to work with. We’re talking about the gossipy HR employee that people keep complaining about. Everyone knows who the problem employee is, and for whatever reason you’ve been holding off on firing them. Sometimes you need to clean house, especially if you already know who is causing the problem. Second chances are over, it’s time to see a big improvement or get rid of them.

Have someone motivate them

Have someone motivate them

Do you love those moments in sports movies when the coach riles up the team by giving a rousing speech? Your office needs that big moment, motivational speakers could easily fill in the role of the coach. Bring in somebody with an intimate knowledge of your field, and have them come in and give your employees some much needed motivation.
