Only Sportspersons get Sports Injuries: That's a MYTH

If you thought only sportspersons are prone to ‘sports injuries’, think again. The so-called Sports injuries are not just confined to sportspersons and only knowledge can keep these at bay. Scientific Animations introduces you to some silent irritants, which stay with you all the time inflicting persistent pain, and prolonged ignorance of these could result in you going under the knife. Let’s understand these injuries so as to avoid them from getting severe.

Tennis Elbow vs Golfer’s Elbow

If the outer elbow hurts, the chances are you may be suffering from lateral epicondylitis, which is commonly known as the Tennis elbow.
When the same condition happens inside the elbow joint, we call it the medial epicondylitis or the Golfer’s elbow.

Coming to the limbs…
This is an overuse injury characterised by inflammation of the Achilles tendon. The inflammation could be the outcome of microtears in the tendon. As a treatment, your physician would advise you to refrain from doing too much too soon.
Achilles injuries are somewhat less common among non-athletes but frequently affect the elderly and sedentary. You are also more susceptible to ruptures if you have:

  • An autoimmune disease,
  • Begun an exercise regimen in middle age
  • Obesity,
  • Certain antibiotics,
  • A habit of smoking, and
  • Localized steroid injections.

Tennis Leg occurs when the tendon ruptures and you feel a sudden jerk. The two conditions are often confused.

Runner’s Knee

It’s every runner’s nightmare to suddenly feel a shooting pain in the knee when midway through a training for their next race, or even worse, during the race.
Runner’s knee is a condition in which the pain is felt mainly in the front region of the knee, specifically on the underside of or somewhere around the edges of the kneecap.

Sprain is an umbrella term for all types of torn ligaments. Such tears usually occur because of trauma or because of excessive pressure on joints. Generally, minor sprains can be managed within a week with some first aid, major ones require some serious surgical intervention.

Apart from these, there are more severe C-spine injuries. Know more about Bone cementing as a non-surgical treatment option for spinal injuries and femoral fractures.
