The best architectural marvels of Koh Samui are reflected in the beautiful temples or wats of Koh Samui. Thailand is a land of many temples as such these beautiful facades are a treat to explore.
This is the islands most iconic attraction. A sight visible as your aircraft approaches Koh Samui the Big Buddha statue is a must visit if you are on a scout for architectural marvels in Koh Samui. The 12 metre tall statue coloured in gold sits at the top of a hill in Wat Phra Yai. At the base of the temple is a collection of souvenir shops and restaurants.
This beautiful temple is home to the famous mummified body of monk Loung Pordaeng who was discovered dead while meditating. The body is still in this position and shows no major signs of decay over the last 20 years. Wat Khun Aram itself is a beautiful façade that is resplendent with a golden tiered roof and many gold statues of Lord Buddha. Visit and enjoy the intricate carvings and gilded edifices of this stunning building. It is located on the 4169 Ring Road between the Hua Thanon and Na Muang waterfalls.
This impressive Buddhist temple is located along the north eastern coast of Koh Samui not far from popular Bophut beach home to Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort. The most striking feature at Wat Plai Laem is the 18 arm giant statue of Guanyin that adorns the roof of the shrine. The white statue is testament to the marvels of Thai architecture as well as Chinese-Thai beliefs. Apart for enjoying the unique architecture you can observe the statues and murals that adorn the temple, for although the temple is recently constructed the architecture and art is based on ancient traditional techniques and beliefs passed down over the centuries. Remember that if you make a donation to the temple you will be offered a bag of fish food to feed the thriving fish within the lake surrounding the temple.
This elegantly decorated Chinese temple is quite a treat to observe. Located in the centre of Nathon this temple was constructed in 1862. A marvellous site to enjoy a dose of traditional Chinese architecture this temple will impress right from the start, for guarding the entrance are two giant golden lions. Enjoy the colours and intricate carvings that make exploring Hainan Temple a treat for all culture buffs.
The glowing golden colour of the pagoda against a backdrop of azure blue sky is quite a contrast. Take along the cameras folks for this is one of the most beautiful feats of Thai architecture. At the entrance are giant statues of Yak warriors brandishing huge swords while a large Buddha Statue awaits you just at the doorway. Consisting of many tiers and spires this is a temple well worth a visit and easily reached from Koh Samui 5 star resorts.
