Mosques in Doha -Places of religion where culture takes form

Mosques play an important role in the culture of Middle East, with Islam being the prominent religion. This is a compilation of five unique mosques in Doha, where culture in monuments is evident.

1

Spiral Mosque

Becoming a notable landmark of Doha within a few short years, the Spiral mosque is a recent construction at the Kassem Darwish Fakhroo Islamic Centre. Located close to Souq Waqif, only a short distance from Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, a landmark of a luxury hotel, Doha has come to appreciate the majesty of the Spiral mosque in leaps and bounds. However, this is not a traditional mosque, but a replica of the Great Mosque of Al-Mutawwakil in Iraq. With the lights basking this structure in glorious light at night, it has become an icon of the city. The Islamic Centre provides information and seeks to explain Islam to non-Muslim foreigners. Visitors to the mosque, and its adjacent department store and cultural centre, can arrange for tours of the premises at the premises itself.

2

Imam Abdul Wahhab Mosque

Also known as Qatar State Grand Mosque, this mosque is of the traditional appearance but with a modern outlook, due to its crisp lines and large open outdoor spaces. However, the mosque is extravagant in its traditional elements such as sandstone facades, a famous feature of architecture in Gulf region. Covering an area of over 175,000 m2, the mosque has facilities for about 11,000 men to offer prayers in its air-conditioned central hall. The adjacent special enclosure for females can house about 1200 women at a time. The mosque has three main entrances and seventeen side entrances, while twenty-eight domes cover the central hall. About sixty-five domes cover the outer buildings. It is calculated that Imam Abdul Wahhab Mosque can hold a congregation of 30,000 people at a time.

3

Fanar Mosque

Belonging to Qatar Islamic Culture Centre & Mosque, Fanar is a mosque that is located in the heart of Doha, the capital of Qatar. Located in close vicinity to Corniche Road, the mosque is considered an important landmark in Doha Bay. Featuring a unique minaret design, Fanar Mosque is currently the largest mosque in Qatar.

4

Katara Mosque

A spectacular structure standing in Doha, speaking of a glorious legacy, Katara Mosque stands apart from all other mosques in Waqif Souq area. The usual mosques in the Souq generally tend to be quasi-historic mosques. While not as large as the grand mosque of Qatar, Katara Mosque shines in its uniqueness with attractive colour combinations, designs and patterned tiles, all of which are a part of the mosque's design.

5

Aspire Mosque

Located at Al Aziziyah, Aspire Mosque is spread across an area of 1460m2 and is able to house 700 men and 150 women for prayers. It blends with the surrounding buildings seamlessly due to its traditional form of architecture and finish.
