If you have had enough time to explore the obvious abundance of well-known attractions in Abu Dhabi perhaps it is now time to enjoy some of its more eccentric treasures. Here are a few.
Al Ain is a rather historically eminent city which was also a section of the Al Buraimi Oasis. The city has now been populated for a time that exceeds 4000 years and there are many important excavation sites that archeologists have stated have indicated towards the human inhabitation of the land. Jabel Hafeet which is a mountain is also said to indicate traces of civilization that date back centuries. Both of these civilizations were masters in the aspect of creating tombs in the style of a bee hive for those who passed away while hunting and collecting used to serve as their form of livelihood. Legend also speaks of an Islamic person of importance who was sent to the area as a mercenary to guide the population towards the Islamic religion. There are also quite a few fortresses that are seen in the region.
Jebel Hafeet translates in English as the "empty mountain" and can be found in Al Ain with one side of this gigantic hill laying on the Omani border. The mountain rises to about 4098 feet and is made of many diverse sections of rocks that are abundant with various fossils of species of plankton as well as various fossils of aquatic fauna such as crabs and corals. There is a labyrinthine network of caverns that have been used for many years in order to traverse the mountain. The entryways to these caverns are somewhat natural but in certain parts of the city, the entryway can be seen barricaded or blocked. The Green Mubazarrah which is a favourite hot spot for foreigners who travel the city can be seen at the bottom of the beautiful Jebel Hafeet which is also said to bear the promise of a stunning view from its peak. The Jebel Hafeet is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places to visit in Abu Dhabi.
If you are able to make some time during the weekdays, visit the Liwa sand dunes which are recognized as being the biggest sand dunes in existence in the world. The area is beautiful and looks like the ideal location for some beautiful camera moments. The place is also one of the most famous among high-flying government diplomats to hang out during the weekend and as such the Liwa area is open to the general public on weekdays. Sand surfing is a sporty and fun activity that you could enjoy here. There are numerous nooks and crannies in lavish Abu Dhabi that can be enjoyed by tourists. Often, these places are neglected or rather, missed out on as travelers tend to stick to the more commonly known attractions. However referring to some information on online portals, information forums and threads as well as blogs such as The Vacation Gateway and many more will point you in the right direction towards these beautiful and hidden exotic locations of the Eastern world.
