The treasures housed within the National Museum are a real treat. The place is home to a marvellous collection amongst which the 26 foot high jewelled throne of King Thibaw Min is a top attraction. There are also on display ostentatious palanquins, betel nut holders with spittoons, kitchen chairs fashioned out of ivory and gorgeous ceremonial dresses. On the other floors a brief history of the country is chronicled while the model of the colonial house is well displayed with the original chandeliers from the place hanging on the ceilings of the two floors of the museum. The museum is located at 66/74 Pyay Road Dagon. Open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm Tuesday to Sunday.
This is quite definitely a nostalgic retreat; the former home of General Aung San who was assassinated in 1947 has a melancholy vibe to it. The building the museum is located in is home to a number of gem stalls where one can purchase some souvenir rocks. The museum and market is located at 66 Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Mayagone.
