It has a history that dates back to French colonial days where the imperial forces stationed in Vietnam brought their crusty baguettes with them. Later the Vietnamese made this yummy sandwich entirely one of their own items and used fillings such as pork belly, meat balls and fish cakes joined by daikon, pickled carrots and chillies.

Try the banh cuon when it is served straight from the steamer and you will get addicted to it. This dish is prepared by dipping scoops of rice flour mixed batter onto the hot steamer and then covering it with a lid for few seconds. After that, the thin sheets together with a bamboo stick are carefully moved to a tray that is filled with pork and minced mushrooms. Each bite you take needs to be topped with small pieces of deep fried shallot and dipped into nuoc cham sauce. Another variety to this dish is the banh beo which means 'water fern cake. It comes from the old imperial city Hue located in central Vietnam. This can be tried by topping it with chopped shrimp, mung bean paste, scallions, crispy fried shallots with added fish sauce.
