Adventurous Experiences in Jabal Akhdar – Discovering the Rugged Side of Oman

Oman is one country in the Middle East that still retains its traditional desert charm. One of the best places to witness this is at Jabal Akhdar, where an enchanting world is to be found.

1

Nature Walks

At 2000 metres above sea level, Jabal Akhdar is among the most beautiful mountains in all of Oman for it is blanketed in a green colour that provides its name as well. Abundantly watered by nature, the mountain is a symbol of life in the desert and is probably one of the best places in Oman to witness a rare collection of Arabian flora and fauna. A nature trail across this mountain is one of the best ways to enjoy & experience all the treasures this place has in store. As for flora, on your way across the mountain you can witness a myriad of different types of fruit crops and even walnuts and olive trees. What really beautifies the Jabal Akhdar though is the abundance of the soft pink damask roses. Nature walks at Jabal Akhdar can be undertaken either for a whole day or for half a day and you can prepare in advance for your excursion by getting some rest at the nearby Alila Jabal Akhdar. You can choose to walk atop the historic "Falaj" irrigation system or hike along a wadi and explore abandoned settlements.

Cave Exploration

There is a mystic appearance in caves no matter where in the world they are and Oman is no exception to this. Jabal Akhdar is home to the mysteriously beautiful Hoota Cave which is indeed a sight to marvel. The cave in itself stretches across 5 kilometres and is a treasure trove of eco-friendly attractions. At one time the cave was only accessible to experienced cavers who knew the art of using appropriate equipment for exploration; however, in the year 2006, the government decided to open the cave to the public to witness the sheer beauty that this intriguing site houses. Since then, guided excursions across this cave have been available and offer an amazing way to look at an entirely different side of Oman. Highlights of this cave include an array of unusual stalactite and stalagmite formations and a lake where thousands of blind, transparent fish make their home in.

Explore the Nizwa Fort and Nizwa Souk

For all those interested in Oman sightseeing, history is one area that this country has in plenty. To witness the birthplace of Islam in Oman pay a visit to the Nizwa Fort, that once served this nation as the capital city. A commercially important place in the yesteryears of Oman, the ample remnants that still stand today showcase the city's significance back in the day. In fact history at the Nizwa Fort goes all the way back to the 12th century and the fort is one place where visitors can enjoy a good essence of this period. For amazing views of age-old Oman climb to the very top of the fort and the panoramic views made out of a mosaic of mud houses and occasional greens are truly priceless.
