Be safe around work zones.
That was the message from the city and the RCMP yesterday. Mayor Lyn Hall and RCMP officers were out on 15th Avenue to remind motorists to be careful around construction zones. Just last month a flag person was killed at a construction site on Austin Road in the Hart.
As the city begins its largest road rehabilitation projects of 2016, it is asking motorists to please respect construction zones and pay attention to signage installed around these projects.
Hall joined with members of the RCMP Monday to deliver a message to motorists to be mindful around projects, watch for temporary signage, and be extra cautious when encountering work zones, workers, and flag people.
The event was timed to coincide with Labour Day Monday, the start of school this week, and two of the largest road re-paving projects of the year: on 15th Ave and Fifth. Milling work started today on 15th.
Including road rehabilitation, the city is undertaking about $50 million in construction projects involving roads, sidewalks, and the utility systems for district energy, water, wastewater, and storm water. Work is nearing completion on the expansion of the downtown renewable energy system to the Law Courts and Plaza 400, the improvement of water service in the Birchwood/Austin area of the Hart, and both the replacement of the watermain and expansion of wastewater collection in the Sussex/Killarney/Wildwood area. Crews also continue to conduct small paving projects throughout the City, paint crosswalks and bike lanes, and repair watermains.
