The Madu Ganga River safari is quite popular when in town; the vast river is home to a large number of little islets some no more than stone outcrops. On one of the islands you can observe an ancient shrine dedicated to an unknown deity but still surviving the test of time. Further along the verdant river you will come to an ancient temple based on one of the islands while the trill of birds and splash of lazy monitor lizards descending into the water fills the environs. Some islands are home to ancient cinnamon cultivations while the lush banks are full of exotic foliage and wildlife. Must visit sites include the Kande Viharaya home to a giant Buddha statue.
The Koggala Turtle Hatchery not far from Bentota is quite a treat; there you will come across turtles of all ages. Turtle eggs are carefully collected and hatched in a safe environment until fit to be released to sea. Further strengthening the conservative efforts the hatchery harbours injured and maimed adult turtles who cannot survive at sea. The hatchery is home to tanks of wriggling baby turtles and adults of all ages while a candlelit dinner at the hatchery is one of the most popular attractions on offer. The huge stretch of golden sand that makes up popular Bentota Beach is where you can enjoy uninterrupted hours of fun in the sun. One of the best things to do in Bentota is to spend a lazy day at this beach which is very clean and well maintained. There are restaurants and cafes around the area while water sports too are available in plenty.
Bentota is an ancient fisher town and the local fish market is full of local flavour and traditions. Enjoy an early morning visit to the market and watch in fascination as vendors and buyers haggle over fresh fish brought in. Best times to visit are between 5 am to 8.30 am.
