Bangkok is home to some of the most exquisite temples in the world. If you are paying a visit, be sure to include these stunning marvels into your itinerary.

1

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha

This temple, locally known as Wat Phra Kaew, is one of the most popular temples in the country. It is also the most important and most visited temple in the city. As the name suggests, the temple's main draw is the magnificent Emerald Buddha, carved from a block of jade, 66 centimetres in height. This is a highly revered religious icon which was discovered in Chiang Rai in 1464. It was taken to Laos and then brought back to Chiang May before finding its permanent home in Bangkok. This stunning temple also features a gallery that is two kilometres in length and covered with fascinating detailed paintings that depict 178 scenes of the Ramayana. Every corner of the temple is a chedi, adorned with gold leaves or glazed tiles. The temple is open until 3pm every day and a strict dress code is applied for visitors. For those of you who wish to explore Bangkok's temples, there are plenty of travel agents in Sri Lanka who can offer you some great deals. Aitken Spence Holidays is a great choice that provides a range of travel packages and tour options to choose from.

The stunning temple was constructed in the 17th century and was named 'Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan'. The temple is now referred to as the 'Temple of Dawn'. The Wat Arun features a central khmer style tower or 'Prang' which is surrounded by four smaller towers. As the name suggests, the temple looks simply magical and dawn and at sunset. Visitors can arrive at the temple on the ferry across the Chao Phraya River.

The temple features some truly fascinating architecture and a gigantic solid gold Buddha statue inside it. This is the largest solid gold Buddha statue in the world at 5 metres in height and 5 tonnes in weight. The statue is encased in stucco and plaster coating which is said to have been done in the 13th – 14th centuries. The fact that the statue is made from gold was discovered by accident in 1955.
