Hikkaduwa was once popular for the 'coral gardens'. Now, it is a fully fledged tourist destination complete with great hotels, attractions and fun activities to enjoy.
Surfing is highly popular in Hikkaduwa. The beach, located about 98 kilometres from Colombo is one of the first Sri Lankan beaches to gain tourist attention. Today, the coastal town of Hikkaduwa is a famous destination for a variety of water sports including surfing. There are many services providers who will provide travellers with surfboards and other necessary gear for the sport. If you are staying at one of the top notch Sri Lanka beach hotels such as the Heritance Ahungalla, you may be able to rent the gear from the hotel as well.

If you are in Hikkaduwa, don't forget to pay a visit to the small private Turtle Research Centre. This establishment is located on the beach, just about 2 kilometres to the north of the town. The Turtle Research Centre is an inspired organization that works hard to protect endangered sea turtles. Visitors can explore the life cycle of the turtle, the hatching process and if the time is right, even partake in turtle hatchling release sessions. The Turtle Research Centre is a great place to learn more about the importance of conserving the endangered sea turtles and the many ways in which travellers can contribute to the cause.
The Seenigama Vihara Temple is located a few kilometres to the north of Hikkaduwa Town. You can simply take a tuk tuk and visit the fascinating historical temple. The beautiful temple is quite a sight on its beautiful island location. Once inside, the temple will provide many learning opportunities into Sri Lanka's religious heritage and of course, an incredible view.
