4 Signs that your Garage Roof needs Replacing

A garage roof is often neglected but the signs that it needs replacing are usually very obvious and easy to identify. If you recognise any of the issues below it is highly advised that an inspection is carried out by a qualified garage roofer to determine the correct course of action.

1

Loose Nails

Loose Nails

If you can see any nails protruding from your garage roof it is a sign that they are starting to loosen. Over time this can lead to an extremely dangerous situation. In stormy weather if enough nails are loosened a strong gust of wind could potentially lift a whole roof panel right off and cause untold damage to life or property.

2

Noise

Noise

If your roof is making loud banging noises on windy days, this is another indication that the garage roofing sheets are loose. The problem will only get worse and if not sorted will risk damaging your roofing sub structure.

3

Damp Patches

Damp Patches

It rains a lot in Britain and even a small leak in your garage roof can cause a lot of damage to your garage. Mould and mildew can cause damage to items stored in your garage as well as to the fabric of the garage itself. If left untreated you may be faced with having to replace the garage as well as the garage roof.

4

Asbestos

Asbestos

If your garage was built in the 1960s or 1970s there is a good chance that it will have roofing made of asbestos cement sheets. In good condition this type of roofing will be perfectly safe, however older asbestos roofs which have been weather damaged can release asbestos fibres which can cause serious health problems if inhaled.

To remove an asbestos garage roof is more expensive . This is because asbestos has to be disposed of safely in a sealed licensed container in a specialist centre. It is also advisable to employ a SEPA licensed company to remove and dispose of asbestos so that you can be sure that the correct safety guidelines have been followed.
