7 Simple Steps to Making an Insurance Claim

When accidents do happen, making a claim on your insurance doesn’t need to be such a dreaded and stressful process. In fact, with the right planning and by taking the time to ensure you have everything you need, making a successful claim on your car, home or travel insurance can be quite simple. Here are 7 steps to making an effective insurance claim from the experts, which can help you get started in no time at all:

1

Preparation is key

Preparation is key

Make sure you’re prepared beforehand by holding onto receipts for the things you have insured, and storing your policy documents safely. Doing so will only speed up the claims process and help things go smoothly. If you’ve insured valuable objects it’s always advisable to take photographs showing their condition so you can provide evidence should something happen to them.

2

Reporting the incident

Reporting the incident

For anything that has been damaged, lost or stolen, it’s important to report this to the police as soon as possible before you do anything else. Many policies will have a time limit, such as 24 hours, for you to report things to the police to keep your claim valid.

3

Are you covered?

Check through your policy document as you could find you’re not actually insured for the incident. And if you are, you may have to follow a procedure set out by the insurance provider. For instance, your car insurance company may specify that you need to get a fix carried out by a particular garage that meets their criteria.

4

What you’ll need

What you’ll need

Gather up these documents as you’ll most likely need them to support your claim – doing so at this point will make the process less stressful in the long run:
• your policy document
• receipts for anything affected in the incident
• reference numbers – e.g. for your insurance account and if you filed a police report

5

Seeking the right advice

If you have purchased your insurance policy through a broker, they may be able to give you suitable advice and support, or work with your insurance company to help you make your claim. It’s strongly recommended to speak to them before you make contact with your insurance company.

6

Calling your insurance company

Calling your insurance company

To make your claim, call the claims helpline for your insurance company. You’ll probably find the correct contact number on your policy document or on their website.

7

Giving a clear picture

Giving a clear picture

You need to provide the facts about the incident clearly and truthfully - giving misleading information or missing out details could harm your claim. If you can, it’s a good idea to write down the following information:

• times and dates of the incident
• everyone involved
• exactly what happened
• what you’re claiming for

Also let your insurance provider how much money you expect to receive.
