Kandy may come first in the list of 'must see' places for couples but this does not mean the city has forgotten those who come with families. In fact there is plenty to do here to suit all ages.
Symbolic to the city of Kandy, the Kandy Lake adorns this city by doubling its beauty by reflection. Offering a combination of tranquillity and adventure, the Kandy Lake is perhaps the most visited attraction for all those exploring this city with children. Who does not like a boat ride? In fact the Joy Boat Ride Service has been in existence since decades and has always been popular among the young and old alike. It takes about 15 minutes to cruise across this enchanted lake and you will be greeted by fish underneath and a world of immaculate beauty surrounding. If there is one thing you must do here with the family, it is definitely this boat ride.
There is nothing like a stroll down a beautiful garden to relax those nerves and let the children run freely a little. One of the most enchanting spots in Kandy, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is indeed a treat worth relishing for it is adorned with some of the most beautiful species in the plant world giving it a unique ambience and beauty. The garden was established in the early 19th century and still remains as one of the most beautiful historical gardens in the island. There is plenty one can learn from here making it an ideal attraction for some fun education for the whole family too. For those interested in accommodation for the family that mirrors the feel of the Peradeniya Gardens, the Mountbatten Bungalow part of Theme Resorts & Spas, is an excellent choice both in terms of space and idyllic beauty. It is amongst the holiday bungalows in Kandy that are within easy reach of such attractions.
A visit to Kandy means a look at the spiritual side of the city most of which is strongly linked to history as well. The Embekka Devalaya is yet another historical temple that came to life during the ancient era. The family would particularly love the historic ambience strongly felt here and the many ornate wood carvings combined with exquisite pillars and a high pitched roof all found in the Drummers Hall adds to the feeling. A majestic destination, don't miss other important halls such as the Dancing Hall and the Sanctum Garaha all of which have something interesting to offer. Although this sacred temple is primarily dedicated to Katharagama Deviyo, the local deity Devatha Bandara is also worshiped here.
The Dalada Maligawa is hands down the biggest attraction in all of Kandy. Literally translated as the Temple of The Tooth, this temple is believed to house the tooth of Lord Buddha himself. Flocked by pilgrims year round, the Dalada Maligawa is an excellent attraction to learn something about Buddhism. That is not all, for the temple explains in a series of vivid pictures, the journey of Lord Buddha's tooth from India all the way to Sri Lanka. Enshrined in a golden casket guarded by 2 large elephant tusks, the tooth relic can be viewed in its enclosure on the second floor of the temple.
