A burglar alarm is a good deterrent and is a good option for increasing security in your home. However many people have an alarm installed but do not use it. It may have been one that they inherited when they bought the property and it is either not right for their needs or they have never been comfortable using it. In either of these cases it is worth getting a security installation company to look at their current set up and finding ways that it can be improved.

If you definitely must have a spare key, the best place to leave it is with a neighbour. If this is not possible NEVER leave it under the mat, flower pot or on a piece of string through the letterbox. Take time to think of an unusual hiding place to leave it, that won't be discovered easily.
Burglars don't like dogs. Even small dogs are a deterrent. However don't waste time setting up recordings of dog barking, it has been found to be no substitute for the real thing.
