Sri Lanka's south is one of the most rewarding places to visit. Beautiful beaches, colonial towns, fishing villages, lush wildlife parks and sacred Buddhist temples are all part of the package here.

Galle

Galle is a truly enchanting city. A perfectly preserved colonial city of southern Sri Lanka; it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Galle Fort - When you walk through the traffic-free streets lined with old villas, buildings in colonial styled architecture, old villas and other reminders of the Dutch era, it feels like you've gone back two hundred years. Galle Fort is one of the best-preserved testimonials of the Dutch era in Sri Lanka, so you better take that down as one of the top places to see.

Dutch Reformed Church – Dating from 1755, this is the oldest Protestant church of worship in sunny Sri Lanka. Even though the interior is rather plain it is one of Galle's most distinct period pieces.

Kalutara

You can find a list of interesting things to do in Kalutara. A laidback seaside town in the south coast of the country, it's the place for a quick getaway to enjoy the sun, sea and sand. Kalutara Bodhiya - One of the most hallowed landmarks in the southern coast, the Kalutara Bodhiya is a sacred Buddhist temple. What stands out about this temple is that anyone who is travelling to and from the south stops at here to pay respect by way of worship or offering whatever his or her religious beliefs maybe. Situated on the estuary of the Kalu River, the Kalutara Bodhiya is an ancient temple that dates back to second century BC.

Richmond Castle - Famed for its spectacular architecture, this is a two-storied mansion built in 1896 with fifteen spacious rooms with various design and construction techniques. It is interesting to note that the house occupies ninety-nine doorframes and thirty-eight windows. A wealthy regional governor and philanthropist who owned the mansion left it for the use of underprivileged children after his demise.

Mulgirigala

One of Southern Sri Lanka's finest ancient monuments is found here in Mungirigala. An array of beautifully decorated ancient cave temples carved out of the flanks of an enormous rock outcrop can be found here. There is a climb of five hundred steps to reach up to the summit where you find the temples, which are arranged on four separate levels.
