Gorgeous scenery, a myriad of ancient attractions and the beauty of Hundred Flower Lake promises to mesmerize and amaze you in Guiyang. Add to this the fascinating minority, customs and traditions.
Also known as the 'First Scholars Tower' this iconic landmark of Guiyang is a must visit. The most unique aspect of the tower is the traditional architecture which is very impressive and keeping with its name – Jiaxiu, which translates to getting the best in imperial exams. Built in the 16th century the tower stands at a height of 65 feet and has a three tiered roof which is reinforced by 12 stone pillars. Joined by the Fuyu Bridge this tower offers access to the southern and northern banks of the Nanming River; within you will come across ancient stone tablets that were inscribed by prominent poets and scholars of Guiyang history.
This is one of the best Guiyang attractions that justify the city's favourite reference as 'China's Forest City'. Located just 1.5kms from the city centre and within easy reach of the Anantara Guiyang Resort this park encompasses a total area of 426 hectares. The place is resplendent with serene forests, crystal clear lakes, verdant mountains and ancient temples. Add to this the spirited bunch of 500 macaques that thrive within the park. The most prominent locations to visit within Qianling Park are Macaque Garden, Hongfu Temple, Sanlingwan, Kylin Cave, Qianling Lake, the zoo, Wind-Rain Bridge and the famous Winding Mountain Path. Hogfu Temple first built in 1667 is the largest Zen Buddhist temple of the province and well worth a visit.
Hundred Flower is a manmade lake; it was built in 1960 once the dam of the hydropower station was established. The beautiful lake is home to hundreds of little islets and glistening bays. It is divided into three picturesque sections; these are the south, north and central lakes. You will be reminded of traditional Chinese landscape paintings when experiencing the uniquely different sectors of the lake. Of all the islets Lusi is famous as a sanctuary for eaglets while limestone caves within the region make it quite an interesting and enjoyable location to explore.
Cuiwei Garden located next to Jiaxiu Tower is a 4,000sqmtr collection of buildings established during the rule of Hong Zhi from the Ming Dynasty. The place started out as the South Nunnery to be called the Wuhou Temple and then the Guanyin Temple. The precint after renovation settled on its present name of Cuiwei Garden. Architect buffs will love the unique vintage designs of the buildings there; Gongnan Pavilion is simple and serene in nature while Cuiwei Pavilion is known for its beauty and classy surroundings. If you love serene surroundings and basking in a quietly beautiful ambiance do plan to spend time at the Cuiwei Garden.
Located 20kms east of Guiyang, Gaopo Township encompasses an area of 107.4kms; the greatest lures here are the historical sites, stunning surroundings and dose of natural culture and tradition. Gaopo is flavoured by the people of the Han, Miao and Buyi nationalities, as such expect to savour the divers traditions and customs reflected in festivals, dances, performances, events and ceremonies when visiting the fascinating township.
