Yahoo has officially announced that Yahoo Messenger will shut down on August 5th. If you're one of the early internet savvy users, you probably found solace in the yahoo messenger's chat rooms. Here's a list of some of the things we really miss about Yahoo Messenger from it's prime days. Feel free to add to the list!
Remember being able to chat with friends and even strangers from all over the world at the same time in Yahoo Chat rooms? Public chat rooms used to be one of the main features of Messenger until it was shut down in 2012 as part of a series of features being changed/added/deleted.
If you used Yahoo Messenger regularly, you probably agree that changing and customizing avatars was one of the most fun things to do on Yahoo Messenger!
As a 90s kid, your earliest memory of social networking is coming back from school as soon as possible to spend hours on Yahoo Messenger chatting!
Much before Facebook started Candy Crush, we had games on Yahoo Messenger. You could invite a friend to play with you or you could access games and applications through the conversation window by clicking the games icon and challenging your current contact.
Internet had a bad reputation back then because it was a new thing so most people would fake their names and basically their whole profile to not fall victim to cyber crime.
Messenger was only accessible when you had a computer and internet access. It also meant that when you had to chat with someone you had to wait for them to come online compared to how whatsapp and other messenger apps work these days.
Messenger had a lot of options to change the theme of individual chats according to our preferences!
Messenger introduced us to the world of emoticons, suddenly we had an emoticon to express every single emotion we had easily over social media! (We had to use the specific characters to create the emogis though)
Imagine using an online version of 'Paint' where you could paint along with your friend on the same artboard. Yahoo Scribbler allowed just that!
Chances are you still have your messenger account and hearing this announcement has made you nostalgic about the old days. Check if your account still exists and say your goodbyes while you can!
An ambivert with a belief that being comfortable in one's own skin is a super power.
