Armed Muslim mob in Egypt attacks elderly Christian woman, parades her naked through streets of Cairo

CAIRO — An armed Muslim mob stripped an elderly Christian woman and paraded her naked on the streets in an attack last week in which seven Christian homes were also looted and torched in a province south of the Egyptian capital.

According to the local Orthodox Coptic church and security officials, the assault in the Minya province village of Karma on Friday began after rumors spread that the elderly woman’s son had an affair with a Muslim woman — a taboo in conservative Egypt.

Police have arrested six men suspected of taking part in the violence and are looking for 12 more, the security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media

Lariam should be 'drug of last resort' for troops

#‎Lariam, an anti-malarial #‎drug prescribed to British troops, should be a 'drug of last resort' says a #‎Defence Committee report. It says the drug has a 'high-risk profile and a minority of users experience severe side-effects'. The Committee concludes that 'there is neither the need, nor any justification' for continuing to issue Lariam to service personnel unless they can be individually assessed. Good things come to those who wait, India. And today, a particularly good thing is crashing into cinemas all over the country. That would be a certain film about a certain flock of certainly not very happy birds. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

The Angry Birds Movie -- screening for Indian audiences in English, Hindi or Tamil language versions -- is already a massive hit in America, China and most European territories. But today, it’s India’s time to shine... and get angry!

And hey: Don’t forget to take your copy of Angry Birds Action! into the cinema with you. But shut off your phone: We want you and everyone around you to enjoy the show. Afterward, though, stick around for the closing credits. Pop open your phone again and fire up the game. Boom! You’ve suddenly got a whole new area of the game to explore, and a new ending to the movie too. Right there on your device! Here’s how it works.

Pretty cool, huh? Happy birdwatching!

Preventable tragedy: Jill’s killer should have been in jail

A Victorian coroner has found Melbourne woman Jill Meagher’s rape and murder were preventable because her killer should have been behind bars at the time, instead of on parole.

Meagher, a 29-year-old ABC employee, was murdered by Adrian Bayley in a lane as she walked home after a drink with a friend on Saturday September 22, 2012.

Despite a history of “violent sexual offending”, Bayley was on parole at the time of Meagher’s murder for a series of rapes committed in 2000 and 2001. Yesterday, a report by the coroner, Judge Ian Gray found it was a “flawed approach” to not cancel his parole after he reoffended early in 2012. “The fact that (Bayley) was a prisoner on parole at the time he murdered Ms Meagher (is) relevant to matters of public health and safety and prevention,” Judge Gray said. “Gillian Meagher’s death was preventable.”

In February 2012, Bayley had walked free from a Geelong court after pleading guilty to bashing a man outside a pub. He was given three months’ jail but appealed against the sentence and was granted bail pending the appeal.

“A more rigorous, risk averse approach ... would have led to a cancellation of Bayley’s parole either when charged with the Geelong offence, or when convicted in the Magistrate’s Court,” Judge Gray wrote.

“It was a flawed practice as it did not bring dangerous and high-risk parolees immediately to account. In this sense it appeared not to prioritise the interests of public safety.”

Judge Gray also referred to the similar deaths of Sarah Cafferkey and Sharon Siermans, who died within six months of Meagher and also at the hands of violent criminals. He said changes to the Adult Parole Board process since the three murders meant similar killings were less likely in the future.

“The safety of the community has now been entrenched as the paramount consideration applicable to APB decision making,” he wrote. “As a consequence of the reforms to the parole system, it is not necessary to make recommendations arising from my investigation of Gillian Meagher’s death.”

Bayley will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Science censorship: Great Barrier Reef scrubbed from UN climate change report

Today it was confirmed that Australian government officials pressured a prestigious international body to silence the truth about the risks of climate change for the Great Barrier Reef.

Climate Councillor Professor Will Steffen, one of the scientists the Australian government tried to silence, shares his response below:

Last year I was asked to review an international scientific report on the impacts of climate change on World Heritage sites and tourism. I reviewed a case study on the Great Barrier Reef, focussing on the increasing risks to tourism from climate change.

Overnight the report was released – but mysteriously, the Great Barrier Reef chapter had been cut completely. I was astonished, given we’ve just witnessed the worst coral bleaching event in the Reef’s history.

Australian officials have now confirmed to The Guardian that they asked the report authors to remove any reference to the Great Barrier Reef, or any Australian world heritage site. No sections about any other country were removed.

As a scientist, I’m angry. As an Australian, I’m disgusted. As a Climate Councillor, I’m now asking for your help.

Today you will hear me on the TV and radio waves as we ask the government to answer these allegations, which are deeply troubling.

I’ve spent a lot of my career working internationally, and it’s very rare to see something like this. Perhaps in the old Soviet Union you might see this sort of thing happening, where governments would quash information because they didn’t like it. But not in western democracies. I haven’t seen it happen before.

Information is the currency of democracy. When governments attempt to suppress or pressure scientific information, we must speak up. To me, this is about more than one report, and more than the Reef.

Sadly, we can’t just rely on governments to provide independent scientific information. We experienced that first hand when the Climate Commission was abolished by the Abbott Government.

Since then, we’ve only seen the government step up their attacks on science – gutting funding for CSIRO, climate research, renewable energy investment and more.

A strong, independent voice for science is more important than ever.

If you believe the public deserve to hear the facts; if you believe the government has no right to silence scientists, then please help fund the Climate Council’s ongoing work.

Thank you,

Prof. Will Steffen

Attracted by Immigration, Education Policies, Some Chinese Americans Stump for Trump by CHRIS FUCHS

Tian Wang is 32, a freelance investor, and he hates people who enter the country illegally.

"Why would you like anybody who's illegal?" he told NBC News.

Wang isn't one to mince his words, which is why he says he likes Donald Trump. At first, he was leaning toward supporting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, but then he discovered some online videos of the billionaire Republican candidate, known for his off-the-cuff remarks, and he binge watched for nearly five hours.

"I said, 'This guy is really cool.' He speaks from his — You know, he speaks from his mouth, really," Wang said, laughing. "But most of the stuff he said is pretty straightforward and true."

Wang, who left China when he was 10, is married with three kids, and lives in Los Angeles, said he would "absolutely" vote for the presumptive Republican nominee save for one small problem — he cannot vote.

So Wang, a permanent U.S. resident, did the next best thing. A week after Trump announced his candidacy, Wang founded a group called "Chinese Americans for Trump," an effort to galvanize eligible Chinese-American voters to back the real-estate mogul in primaries, caucuses, and the general election.

"It is my freedom to go out on the street and say, 'I love Trump,' as a permanent resident," Wang said, adding that he's filed his citizenship papers and hopes to cast a ballot in November
