When I first joined LinkedIn 7 years ago, there were around one million members, and not a single one of those million was somebody I knew. When I started inviting colleagues to connect, I first had to explain to them why they should take the time to build a profile on LinkedIn. It was a tough sell. Social networking was fairly new, no one outside Harvard had yet heard of Facebook, and most people just didn’t see the point.
