Diving Places in Bali – Underwater Havens

Scuba divers of varied levels can enjoy a spot of diving in the calm waters off Bali. The most popular areas Padang Bay, Amed and Pulau Menjangan are the best experiences.

1

Tulamben

Tulamben

Tulamben offers one of the best wreck dive sites in the world. It is also one of the easiest to manoeuvre. The wreck dive can be started at just 30 metres off shore and from a mere depth of just 4 metres. The wreck is not the only allure for the coral and fish are just as fascinating to observe.

Pemutaran, Lovina

Pemutaran, Lovina

Pemutaran is one of Bali's best sites for Muck Diving. There is virtually no current and visibility is excellent. The marine life is beyond the standard species and quite a treat to explore at night. This is when the nocturnal little sea creatures decide to come out of hiding. Otherwise Pemutaran is perfect for beginners as well as snorkelers. The area consists of coral slopes that descend to 25 metre depths. The coral is the best attraction with sponges and gorgonians living on the rocks; however the El Nino effect of 1998 has damaged some of the coral closer to the surface. On a lucky day there is a chance of spotting a giant Manta Ray.

Menjangan Island

Menjangan Island

Diving is a very rewarding affair around Menjangan Island; enjoy wall diving to depths of 20 to 60 metres. The walls are quite a sight as they are inlaid with little caverns, gorgonian sea fans and sponges. Diving around the island is recommended for beginners too as the currents are low and the waters offer excellent visibility, even to depths of 50 metres. Macro photography is highly encouraged as the coral beds and walls are lovely hazes of colour. Although better known for its collection of small fish Menjangan does reward you with sights of black tip reef sharks and manta rays – during special times of the season. Avoid the monsoon season between April and October; with the best season being from October to November. A good Bali resort will offer day tours to Menjangan Island. Seminyak home to the Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort, is by far the most luxurious tourist resort in Bali located just a few minutes from Menjangan Island.

Candidasa

Candidasa

The best dive sites in Candidasa are converged around the rocky outcrops of Gili Biaha, Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimpang and Gili Selang. These places are tipped to be the best dive spots around the island of Bali offering excellent visibility and rather chilly waters. The area is well known for various types of shark such as white tip, black tip, the Wobbegong shark, reef shark and the very rare sightings of hammerhead and cat sharks. If you dive during the season of August to October there's a good chance that you will see the famous Oceanic Sunfish – Mola Mola.

Amed

Amed

Amed is an easy dive site. It is also highly recommended for snorkelling and Macro Photography. The area is well known for its gorgeous coral beds and excellent visibility. Night diving is a good option around Amed.
