The entrancing island of Koh Phangan offers many attractions for the visitor. From features of nature to cultural attractions and Muay Thai, there is sure to be something to attract your interest.
The imposing Khao Ra mountain is the highest point on Koh Phangan and is a rewarding mountain to climb, offering splendid views from its upper reaches. There is in fact a road which ascends the mountain, commencing from Ban Tai and continuing to Thong Nai Pan Beach which is situated on the north-eastern side of the island. Unfortunately the construction of this road has not been completed and therefore a suitable means of transport such as a four-wheel-drive vehicle or dirt bike will be needed to negotiate it. However there are also footpaths by which you can ascend the mountain on foot.
Visitors will have the opportunity to watch authentic Muay Thai (Thailand's native martial art) bouts where skilled and powerful fighters pit their strength and skill against each other. Interestingly these Muay Thai bouts are not always staged at the same location; instead the locations are selected by the drawing of lots. If you are interested in ascertaining the location and date on which the next contest will be conducted, simply visit a boxing stadium and inquire from those knowledgeable. You will find that both Thongsala and Haad Rin in Koh Phangan boast outstanding Muay Thai venues. Muay Thai fights offer nonstop action and entertainment as the fighters draw on all their reserves to emerge triumphant.
Phaeng Waterfall is one of the biggest in the island and is an easily accessed attraction for visitors. This wonder of nature may be reached via a rather steep path that will take you through mountainous terrain. Naturally the waterfall will be at its most impressive after a considerable amount of rainfall has been experienced during the monsoons. You will find that this waterfall features two distinct levels and a number of tracks that lead to attractive viewpoints on the adjacent mountain. From these viewpoints you will be able to enjoy splendid views over the surrounding landscapes. Visitors will be able to avail themselves of experienced guides at Phaeng Waterfall if they so desire.
The appealing Kuan Yin Chinese Temple is a cultural attraction that is always interesting to visit. This intriguing temple consists of seven distinct buildings, all of which are attractive with many offering scenic views over the surrounding countryside. Within the temple compound you will find several colourful pagodas, an eye-catching dragon drum, a prominent golden Buddha figure and many wind chimes. The central image worshipped at the shrine is Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, who is a Chinese Taoist deity. This engrossing temple can be easily visited whilst staying at Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas, an ideally located Koh Phangan resort on the island.
Wat Pho is an attractive temple that offers many features of interest for the visitor. This pleasant temple projects a calm tranquillity even when it is occupied by a considerable number of visitors. This serene shrine attracts a host of physical wellbeing enthusiasts as it features a centre for massage as well as an herbal sauna charging very moderate rates. Wat Pho is situated within expansive grounds containing a number of simple buildings as well as an attractive pond with lilies. However it is probably best known as the best place for massage in the island of Koh Phangan.
