Yangon holds much commercial importance in Myanmar. Being a predominantly Buddhist country, Yangon is naturally home to a host of temples.
A most revered site in the Buddhist world, Shwedagon Paya is bejewelled pagoda. It is decorated by 27 metric tons of gold leaf. The pagoda is also studded with diamonds and other kinds of gems. This is that much bejewelled because the pagoda shelters eight hair relics of the Buddha along with the relics of former Buddhas.
You need to choose one of the four entrance stairways to get to the main terrace. If you visit here during the sunset, you will feel the utmost bliss of spiritual serenity. Even otherwise, any time is suitable to reach here and perform your rituals before the golden stupa.
If you are interested about getting to know more about the stupa, there are enough guides. You don't have to worry about finding one, as they will naturally locate you. They will readily offer you details about the stupa. Or, you can simply ask four guide services from any of the Yangon hotels such as Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon.
Sometimes you may wonder if it is that river that attracts the large crowd to the Botataung Paya. There could be some truth to what you think. The large river is quite an attraction. But you won't find the place crowded all the time. This pagoda is much simpler than Shwedagon. The unique thing you get to observe here is the winding corridor stretched from floor to ceiling. It will lead you to the inside stupa which is about 131 feet.
In a different area, you will be able to sight the bronze Buddha. This statue was brought from a palace in Mandalay. You can also see a pond of various kinds of turtles.
The temple is named Botataung as a mark of respect for the 1000 military chiefs who transported the Buddha's hair relics. Before the relics were distributed, they had been deposited in the paya for six months.
The paya was refurbished following the 1943 war. As a result, you can walk inside however much hollow the paya is. Inside, you will also come across a gold maze. It is filled with glass showcases of relics and various other artefacts. These artefacts are mostly silver and gold Buddha statues.
This paya could be found in a shed with a metal roof. Inside you will meet the reclining Buddha. The statue is about 65 metres long. On the top of the Buddha's face, you will find a crown of diamonds and a host of valuable stones. By the Buddha's feet, you will find a small abode dedicated to Ma Thay. He is considered holy as he had the spiritual power to halt rain and ensure sailors a protected sea journey.
The Buddha statue in Ngahtatgyi Paya is calm and serene. About 46 feet in height, this Buddha statue is situated on a wooden background. More than any other Buddha statue, you will see unique features of this Buddha statue.
