Temple Attractions in Bangkok – Exploring the Sacred Side of Bangkok

A highly spiritual destination, Bangkok flaunts plenty of exotic places of worship most of which spans several centuries. Below are some of the best few temples that can be found in the city.

1

Grand Palace and the Royal Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Grand Palace and the Royal Temple of the Emerald Buddha

This is by far the most prominent temple in all of Bangkok for it depicts history and spirituality in the grandest fashion. Constructed in the year 1782, the temple flaunts a truly spectacular architecture. A masterpiece without a doubt, the Grand Palace was once the residence of royals and even though it no longer serves this purpose it still remains dear to the people of Thailand. Within the complex of the Grand Palace is the Royal Temple of the Emerald Buddha which as the name suggests, houses a Buddha statue carved entirely from a single piece of jade. Sparkling in green colour, the carving goes back to the 15th century and is symbolic to Buddhism in Thailand.

The Temple of the Reclining Buddha

The Temple of the Reclining Buddha

Yet another spectacular temple in Bangkok, the Temple of The Reclining Buddha as the name has it, houses an awe-inspiring statue of a reclining Buddha which is magnificent to say the least. 15 metres in height alone, this reclining Buddha spans across a massive 46 metres and the feet alone are 5 feet in length. Locally known as the Wat Pho, this Buddha statue flaunts quite a remarkable feat in skill and is definitely worthy of admiration. If you are looking for some good luck while exploring this spiritual hotspot in the city, purchase a couple of coins at the entrance and toss it into the brass bowls situated in the room where the Buddha statue is found; great fortune has been associated with this practice.

Wat Arun

Wat Arun

If you want to lay eyes on one of the most breathtaking temple settings in all of Bangkok it really does not get better than Wat Arun. Fondly referred to as the Temple of Dawn, Wat Arun is so symbolic to the nation that it has made its way into the Thai currency. Adorned with a spectacular golden tower the temple looks particularly breathtaking during the early hours of dawn or at dusk making it an excellent spot to capture some breathtaking photographs. Located across the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun can be ideally explored with the Ayutthaya Thousand Golden Temples Cruise offered by Anantara Cruises, Thailand. In this tour you will be taken to the Temple of Dawn where you can enjoy a good dose of sites from Bangkok's Ayutthaya Period. As part of this river cruise Bangkok has to offer you will also be taken to the Royal Barges National Museum and experience the capital's history which is just as colourful as all the temples the city has in store.
