Things to do in Hoi An – Experiencing the best of Vietnam

Exploring the Old Town of Hoi An is one of the most interesting things to do in this wondrous city. The great thing about it is that it is small enough to get around on foot and even on a vehicle it's a breeze since there's very little traffic. Declared as a UNESCO heritage site Hoi An is a place you will fall in love during the first visit. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it was one of Southeast Asia's major trading ports. Today, it is basically a living museum with a mishmash of unique east and west architecture. Today, it's heritage can be traced through the grand architecture and captivating riverside setting. Among the heritage architecture are the Chinese temples, pagodas, wooden shop houses, French colonial houses and a Japanese designed bridge.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site that can be reached within an hour's drive from Hoi An is the My Son Sanctuary. For culture vulture, this is a must see. My Son Sanctuary was the religious centre for the capital of Champa Kingdom and it is revealed that majority of it was built during the 10th century. The ruins of the stone sculptures, temple and towers are all similar to the historical Hindu temples found in Southeast Asia. The best time to go sightseeing is early morning when it is less crowded. Apart from the remarkable history and significant architecture, the surrounding greenery is quite soothing. The Fujian Assembly Hall is another historically important place in Hoi An. Initially opened as a pagoda dedicated to Buddha, it was restored as the Phuk Kien Assemble Hall which stands today as a symbol of Hoi An's architecture and a place that has gained a name as a historically important heritage masterpiece.

Probably one of the best markets in Vietnam, Hoi An's Central Market is a place where you can find excellent food to match your budget. Overlooking the River Thu Bon, you find a colourful display of exotic fruits, vegetables as well as an array of spices and souvenirs to take home. The finest Vietnamese silk can be found here and you can get your tailoring done while you wait. If bargaining is your skill then this is the place to use it.

The River Thu Bon plays a significant role in Hoi An. Taking a cruise down the river is another way to explore the town. The scenery around the river is truly remarkable and many visitors prefer to find accommodation at a Hoi An River Resort such as the famous Anantara Hoi An Resort which is located overlooking Thu Bon. Tourist boats are available for cruises and you can also take a local Sampan for a different experience.
