Best Places to see Cheetahs in Africa

Many consider leopards to be the most elusive cat in Africa, but cheetahs ca be just as elusive. Here are some places where you stand a good chance of seeing cheetah

Ndutu area located in southern Tanzania is a wildlife mecca in the months of Dec-April. Almost all the wildebeest are there and they are calving. Other predators are also coming to give birth, which attracts predators. Leopards, lions, and even the occasional wild dog come for the feast. But the predator that is in true abundance in the Ndutu area during this time is the cheetah.

Every year from Dec-April the Ndutu area of Serengeti becomes a cheetah mecca. They come to feed on the wildebeest and their calves, and they come in high number. There are an abundance of females, cubs, and coalitions of males that come to this bounty. People have reported cheetah sightings and hunts on every game drive in Ndutu. They have reported 20 individuals in 7 days and 23 in less than 6 days.Cheetahs have been known to jump on the roof of cars and sometimes stick their head in the vehicle. Ndutu is considered by many to hold the crown of best cheetah viewing on the planet. It should be noted that only Dec-April you will have such great activity. You may spot them in the dry season, but the sightings will not be as common.

Other than cheetahs, Ndutu contains a good number of lions. Though the lion density may not be as high as most other areas in the Serengeti, lions can still be viewed daily, often times hunting and killing wildebeest. Leopard are also very common in Ndutu, and there have been several sightings of leopard and their young. When the wildebeest and zebra come to calve in Ndutu, it is a truly amazing spectacle, with a sea of wildebeest bodies.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a massive park located in the Kalahari Desert. It is located in Botswana and South Africa(only talking about the South Africa side). The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has two main highlights; watching cheetahs hunting on the Auob Riverbed and watching the magnificent and majestic black-maned Kalahari lion.

Cheetahs are very abundant on the Auob riverbed Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Many claim this area to be the best place in the world to see cheetah to take down prey. During the springbok lambing season, people have reported multiple sightings a day including 3-5 hunts of springbok in a single day. Outside of the lambing season, cheetahs are still spotted very frequently, and many people spot them every day outside of the lambing season. You can also see hunts outside of the lambing season. here are several cheetah on the riverbed with lots of cubs. Some can be far, but lots of the sightings are up-close and personal. It should be noted that you only have very high chances of spotting them in ct-Jan. While other times are also good, they are less reliable. Also, the Auob greatly outweighs Nossob when it comes to cheetah, and if you want consistent sightings you will have to drive up the Auob Riverbed.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park also has the magnificent , beautiful, and famous Kalahari black-maned lions. The lions that live in Kgalagadi and other areas of the Kalahari are bigger than most other lions and have huge black manes. The manes are very beautiful and many wildlife enthusiasts got to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park just to see this emblem of the wild.

Other than lions and cheetah, Kgalagadi has leopards, mainly around Urikaruus and Grootkolk. They are fairly low in number and you do not have a very high chance of seeing them. There are also tons of raptors in Kgalagadi, and many go there just to see these raptors.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's most famous park, if not Africa's most famous park. It is known for its vast open plains, huge rides, of lions, and the great wildebeest migration crossing the Mara river. But the Masai Mara National Reserve also has one of the most sustainable and easily view able population of cheetahs on the planet.

Cheetahs are very abundant and habituated to vehicles in the Masai Mara National Reserve. This makes sightings very easy and common. There have been sightings of cheetahs with 6 cubs and cheetahs hunting wildebeest and gazelle. The Masai Mara National Reserve is home to the famous cheetahs like Malaika and the Honey boys. People have reported cheetah sightings on every game drive in Masai Mara, often times hunting and eating. The hceetahs have been known to jump on top and even in vehicles in Masai Mara National Reserve. Many consider Masai Mara National Reserve to be the best place on the planet to see cheetah.

Other than cheetahs, Masai Mara National Reserve has much more to offer. It has an extremely high lion density, one of the largest on the planet. Masai Mara is home to the famous Marsh Pride. Lions are pretty much spotted on every game drive, and some consider Masai Mara to have the best lion viewing on the planet. Leopards are fairly common in Masai Mara, particularly along the Talek River. In Masai Mara you can see the famous wildebeest crossing where the wildebeest cross the Mara River and are attacked by crocodiles and other animals.

Kwara camp is located on the northern fringes of the Okavango Delta and is known for its large population of predators.

Cheetahs are in very high numbers in the Kwara Camp in the northern Okavango Delta. The area is perfect terrain for cheetah as there is lots of there favorite prey animals and there are not too much lions, allowing cheetahs and their cubs to thrive. In Kwara Camp cheetah are considered plains game because they are so common. It is considered by many to be the best camp in Botswana to see cheetah and some even consider it the best in the world to see cheetah. Recent reports have said that cheetahs were spotted on every game drive. Other people have reported seven cheetah sightings in this fantastic camp in just four days. It is definitely Okavango's and Botswana's cheetah camp.

Kwara Camp also has a good population of leopards with people reporting daily sightings. Lions, though not too common, can also be spotted frequntly, sometimes on every game drive.

Phinda Game Reserve is a private game reserve located in KwaZulu-Natal. it is one of South Africa's premiere safari destinations due to its abundant game and predators and close proximity to one of South Africa's biggest cities; Durban. But the main highlight in this beautiful reserve is the large population of the elegant and graceful cheetah.

Many consider Phinda to be the best reserve in South Africa to see cheetah, its only competitor being Kgalagadi. Phinda is very consistent when it comes to cheetah sightings. There are quite a few mothers with cubs and males in this small reserve. Many people have reported sightings of cheetahs on every game drive in Phinda Private Game Reserve.

Lions are also very common in Phinda and they are pretty much daily occurrences. Some people have spotted them on every game drive. There is a good population of leopards in Phinda, but they are pretty skittish unlike cheetahs or lions. It is hard to spot them and when you do, it is brief. Phinda also has lots of rhino.
