Things to do in Mirissa - Experience the very essence of island life

Located just over 150 km to the south of Colombo, the little beach town of Mirissa has fast become one of the most popular destinations for beach holidays. Here’s a list of things to do in Mirissa:

1

Whale and dolphin watching

Whale and dolphin watching

This is, hands down, the most important part of your travel itinerary in Mirissa. Since the experience is available only during high season (December to April), it is best that you pre-plan your holiday. Hop aboard a boat to be taken a few kilometres into the Indian Ocean and be mesmerised by the Blue, Humpback and Sperm whales. On most occasions, you will see pods of dolphins swimming alongside your boat, so don’t forget your cameras. Most Mirissa hotels such as Sri Sharavi Beach Villas work with local agents to facilitate whale and dolphin watching excursions. enter link description here

If you are a beginner, looking to take a few lessons or just ride a few light waves, head over to Weligama, which is located a few minutes from Mirissa. Expert surfers can put their skills to the test at the Mirissa Bay. The region also has many diving locations if you are keen on observing beautiful corals and colourful fish.

The sunset view from atop the hill is almost perfect. At the end of the little town is Bandaramulla Temple, which is home to a large, seated Buddha statue. The Samudrathira Temple is located just minutes away towards the seaside.

The river safari in Matara (located less than 30 minutes away) gets you up, close and personal to crocodiles. You may also visit a number of turtle hatcheries in Ahungalla, Kosgoda and Tangalle. You would be surprised to know that five out of seven species of sea turtles come ashore in these regions to lay eggs.
