Nikon just unveiled the new D500, part of its Nikon DX series of APS-C digital cameras, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today. The camera mixes some of the power of the high-end Nikon D5 - the D500 has the same auto-focus system and Expeed 5 processor - with the ease-of-use and accessibility of the more entry-level Nikon D5500.

Nikon's has neglected its smaller sensor DX DSLR lineup of late, but it just changed all that in one fell swoop by launching the D500. It says that the new camera has "advanced smart device capability," meaning that Nikon wants it to play well with smartphones and other gadgets.

Camera company PR agencies of course always try to hype press conferences as much as possible, to get as many press as they can to attend. Even allowing for that, though, we think Nikon is going to have some significant announcements here.

Nikon announced the Nikon D500 today - so the immediate question on everyone's mind is does it crush the Canon EOS 5D Mark III or the Sony A7s Mark II or the Panasonic GH4? Well, ok, maybe I click baited you... because until we get our hands on these cameras we don't know do we?

Nikon has announced the much-anticipated followup to its D300S, which the company calls its 'best enthusiast DX offering.' It features the same 153-point AF system and EXPEED 5 processor. It can shoot continuously at 10 fps with a 200 shot buffer for Raw images.

Nikon today announced the new D500 DSLR, a DX-format crop-sensor DSLR with pro-level features. It's the successor of the popular Nikon D300S, but it shares quite a bit in common with the new Nikon D5. "The New Nikon D500 establishes a new era of DX-format performance," Nikon says.
