Forensic Entomology Resources

This list contains resources to enhance the study of Forensic Entomology.

Forensic Entomology is More than Just Blow Flies and Beetles

Fans of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and similar TV shows know that forensic entomology involves the use of insects and other arthropods in legal matters, including homicide cases. Entomologists who are properly trained can find clues about a corpse - for example, time of death and whether a body has been moved - by observing the insects on and around it.

Blowfly maggots provide physical evidence for forensic cases

Estimation of the post mortem interval (PMI) is one of the most crucial matters in autopsies and entomological specimens have been widely used to determine PMI after 72 hours of death. This is done using the oldest blowfly larvae found and from the succession pattern of insects that colonize the dead remains.

Investigating forensics

Investigating Forensics includes information and activities that recreate some of the challenges forensics experts deal with. The user will learn first-hand about forensics by taking on the roles of Forensic Archaeologists, Anthropologists, Entomologists, Botanists, DNA Analysts, and Stable Isotope Analysts.

Entomology

Forensic entomology is the study of insects for medico-legal purposes. There are many ways insects can be used to help solve a crime, but the primary purpose of forensic entomology is estimating time since death. Once a person dies his or her body starts to decompose.

The Science Spot

I start each class period with a warm-up activity targeting forensic science concepts and other skills (observation, problem-solving, etc.) The challenges are in the form of PowerPoint presentations and include spot-the-differences puzzles, mini mysteries, trivia challenges, and vocabulary builders. I have also created several warm-ups that incorporate CSI-related videos that are available online.
