Top Five Home Security Tips

October is the perfect time to consider and review your home security. The nights are drawing in, temperatures are dropping and you want to feel safe and secure within the comfort and warmth of your home.

Here are our top 5 home security tips to keep you safe this winter:

1

Keep your keys somewhere safe

Keep your keys somewhere safe

Whether these are the keys to your house, outbuildings or even a friend or relative’s property, it is important that you keep them somewhere safe. This could be anywhere from the kitchen cupboards to hanging up under the stairs – as long as you remember where your secret place is! If at any point you think you have lost these keys outside of your home, it would be wise to call in a locksmith and get your locks changed for added protection.

2

Keep your windows and doors locked when you’re not at home

It is unlikely during the winter months that you will want to leave windows open to cool your home down but even one window left slightly ajar for ventilation could pose a security threat. When you go out make sure you lock all windows and doors and keep the keys somewhere safe.

3

Get faulty or damaged doors and windows repaired

Get faulty or damaged doors and windows repaired

You may have overlooked that broken lock or damaged door handle in the summer months when you were leaving the windows open, but with the colder weather forcing you to keep them shut, now is the ideal time to address the repairs. Broken locks and misaligned doors make your home more vulnerable to forced entry, so it’s best to act now and have them repaired or replaced by a professional. For added security you may like to install anti-snap locks which protect your home from lock snapping – a technique commonly used in burglaries.

4

Change the locks

If you can’t account for any of the copies of your house keys you have made over the years, now is the time to get the locks changed. Whether you have forgotten to get the keys back that your friends borrowed whilst staying with you, or have cancelled your cleaning service but have not had your key returned, if you can’t account for the whereabouts of your keys it makes sense to replace the locks. This may also be an opportune time to install #highsecuritylocks to increase the safety your home provides and reduce the risk of being broken into.

5

Don’t forget about sheds and outbuildings

Whilst the majority of sheds and outbuildings can be secured to a certain extent, they are rarely going to offer the same safety of a double glazed, lockable, brick built property. This doesn't, however, mean that their security is any less important. If you value the contents of your outbuildings ensure they remain locked when you are not at home and where possible don’t use them to store anything valuable. You could consider security lights and even CCTV systems if you wish to add extra security and present a deterrent to would-be thieves.
