Learn Sustainable Graphic Design

This is a list of resources for graphic designers who want to educate themselves about sustainability in our industry. Sadly, sustainability isn't taught (and in most cases is hardly mentioned) in many graphic design classes, so we put this list together to help those motivated enough about sustainable design to educate themselves.

Green Graphic Design by Dougherty, Brian, Celery Design Collaborative

Can a graphic designer be a catalyst for positive change? Breaking down the concept of "green design" step-by-step, respected industry leader Brian Dougherty captures the ability of designers to communicate, persuade, and ultimately spread a socially and ecologically responsible message to both consumers and corporations.

The Upcycle

From the authors "Cradle to Cradle," the next step, in which we improve the resources we use "The Upcycle" is the eagerly awaited follow-up to "Cradle to Cradle," the most consequential ecological manifesto of our time.

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns.

Mightybytes Blog

One of the few sustainable web design and development studios in the country, if not the world, their blog is a great resource for that elusive subject of sustainable digital design.

Overview | Living Principles

The Living Principles was founded by a coalition of AIGA members to help guide all designers towards sustainable actions. Their Roadmap is one of the best guides for sustainable design that you will find. The site encompasses graphic design as well as industrial, interior, architectural, and fashion design. The resources section has a list of books, films, and links that are very helpful.
