5S describes how a workspace needs to be organized in order to reach efficiency and effectiveness. It got its name from five words that start with an 'S':
In Toyota Production System, there are 3 types of variation: muda, mura, muri. These 3 words begin with "mu", hence they were called the 3 mu, or 3M abbreviated.
