STEAM Apps for the Elementary Classroom

My Apps list for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math....

Star Walk™ Kids - Explore Space & Planets

Science: Star Walk Kids - Explore Space & Planets
Vita Technology, Inc.
Star Walk is an adventure into the night sky. It will encourage astronomical curiosity and allow for you to explore the night sky.
Bloom's Taxonomy level: Knowledge

I chose this App because of the ease of use. Also the app uses the user's location and shows the night sky above that specified location. Great App for 4th Grade Science unit: The Study of our Solar System.

The Land of Venn - Geometric Defense

Math: The Land of Venn - Geometric Defense
iMagine Machine LTD
This App is a game which is designed to help learn Geometry. There are subtle lessons that the narrator guides the user through all while playing a game. Playing = Learning
Bloom's Taxonomy level: Knowledge

I chose this App because it aligns with the CCSS, it is engaging with a "gaming" challenge and there is an increase in difficulty as you go through the levels.

Mini Monet - Creative Studio and Art Club for Kids

Art: Mini-Monet
Sprite Kids
Great Art App for children with a coloring feature. This app captures the love of Art, drawing & coloring all in one.
Bloom's Taxonomy level: Application

I chose this App because it is an Art app which also has symmetry. The App can be cross-curricular with Math especially when teaching symmetry and geometry.

ScratchJr

Technology: Scratch Jr.
MIT Media Lab, Tufts University and Playful Invention Company
ScratchJr is a unique and powerful app that will empower young elementary students to learn beginning concepts of computer programming while they build skills in problem-solving, sequencing, memory and more.
Bloom's Taxonomy level: Evaluate

I chose this App because at the elementary level, there are MANY of my students without any technology background. I felt this would be a wonderful App to kick off computer science in my classroom and would segway nicely into using code.org.

MarcoPolo Ocean

Engineering: Marco Polo Ocean
MarcoPolo Learning Inc.
Kids can dive deep and explore the ocean while interacting with marine life and creating their own ocean habitats.
Bloom's Taxonomy Level: Synthesis

I chose this App as a "kickoff" into the Engineering Design Process within the Science curriculum. Also, it connects to Habitats & Ecosystems (also in Science). Allowing for my students to understand that there is a process to complete before you go and build something is something that this App can do in a simple & quick way.
