Cracking your windshield is one of the most unfortunate things that can happen to your car. It’s a pain and often results in windshield repair. No matter if you’re from Utah or New York, a crack is never fun. But, little do many know, each crack has a different name. Maybe giving a name to it will make it less painful.
This type of damage to a windshield is usually caused by a rock, or other circular object. A bull’s eye chip is characterized by the large chunk of glass that is taken out of the middle.
This type of crack starts 2 inches from the edge of the windshield and often times reaches all the way to the edge of the windshield. An edge crack usually results in the need for an entire windshield repair.
A combination break is characterized by multiple types of breaks in a windshield. An example of this is a chip with cracks coming off of it.
This type of crack is similar to a bull’s eye in the way it is acquired, as it is result of the impact of a rock or circular object. The difference comes in the shape of the crack: a half moon crack does not make a complete circle.
A stone break, appropriately named, comes from a stone or other hard item hitting the windshield. This break looks like a small chip and can often turn into a large crack over time.
A floater crack begins in the middle of the windshield. This means it is anywhere that is not within 2 inches of the edge of the windshield.
A star break consists of a series of small circular cracks with several points spiraling off of it, resembling a star.
This type of crack does not come from direct impact to the windshield. It is usually a result of temperature change. In places where winters are extremely cold like Utah or Colorado, drivers need to take the necessary precautions to avoid an entire windshield repair.
