Best Windsurfing Spots in the Maldives

During the monsoon the seas off the eastern reef of North Male Atolls produce some of the best waves for wind surfers. The southern atolls too have several well known breaks though less spectacular.

North Male Atoll

North Male Atoll

This part of Maldives is famous for its many surf breaks. The waves here are a mix of rights and lefts and are suitable for recreational as well as high performance windsurfers. The wind speed and direction during monsoon months keep wave heights between three and eight feet and increase wave periods.

Baa Atoll also provides great conditions for this water sport. Anantara Kihavah Villas Maldives which is among popular Maldives hotels, on Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, offers windsurfing as a non motorized water sport option.

Thaburundhoo

Thaburundhoo

This uninhabited island on the eastern reef of North Male Atoll is well known for some of the most consistent waves. Its 200 meter barrelling wave will most definitely provide an adrenaline rush for windsurfers. The smaller waves that break off Thaburundhoo are described as 'fun waves'.

Lohi Fushi Island

When southeast swells and high tide connects the two main sections of a wave it produces long and hollow waves such as those that break off Lohi Fushi Island also on the eastern reef of North Male Atoll, much to the delight of windsurfers.

5

Thulusdhoo Island

The waves that break on the exposed reef of Thulusdhoo Island on the eastern reef of North Male Atoll can be surfed at low and high tides for short intense rides.

The outer atolls located 300 miles to the south, also generate several waves appropriate for windsurfing. February to April and September to November are the best months to catch the best breaks here.
