H.R. Giger’s Musical Influence: 5 artistic collaborations

H.R. Giger was well known for his biomechanoid and beautifully dark art for the Alien movies. This brilliant Swiss Surrealist had us questioning (in the post-humanist approach), what it means to be human in the technological age. As a tribute to the late Giger, here are some of his collaborations with the music world.

1

Ibanez Guitars

A guitar becomes another limb for an artist, much like the blending of body and machine in Giger’s work. A guitar does not just produce a sound, it produces a vision as a canvas as well.

2

Johnathan Davis Mic Stand

Johnathan Davis is the lead singer of the rock band Korn. Giger designed his mic stand in his fashion, as the female body is made machine. The microphone, like the guitar, acts as another limb for a performing musician. Once again, the female body is designed in pieces and pulled apart to be used.

Giger designed this cover art for the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. The skull, stripped of flesh, is surrounded by the cold mechanical. The skull, left without the warmth of blood and tissue, might as well be part of the mechanical inner machine.

Debbie Harry’s face stares back at the spectator regardless of the needles through her skin. Much like an extreme piercing, her unflinching expression makes us believe that they’re meant to be part of her. She also used some of Giger’s work during performances.

Celtic Frost cover art for To Mega Therion

Giger designed the jesus-turned-weapon cover for death metal band Celtic Frost. In true Giger fashion, the body is being used out of what we think it’s meant for. This is especially interesting with the turn of a famous pose of Jesus into the sling shot held by the Devil.
