Traffic collisions are scary, but unfortunately, Utah is home to many auto accidents every year, especially during the potentially dangerous winters Utah is known for. However, if you live in Utah, you’ll be happy to know that of the top three worst auto accidents in US history, none of them have occurred here. Here’s a list of them, what happened, and where they occurred.
Virginia had unexpectedly been enjoying good weather during February, until the temperature took a sudden dive to below freezing temperatures in just a day. This drop in temperature brought with it a horrific snowstorm that caused a whiteout on Interstate 95. The pileup that would ensue would kill one person and injure another 31 people. However, despite the low number of fatalities, the snowstorm was responsible for creating a pile up consisting of a whopping 117 cars.
Though the scale of this auto accident is significantly smaller than the previous one, it is a testament to just how horrible the aftermath of a car crash can be. A Virginian couple, Kevin Chittum and his fiancée, Whitney Rogers, along with Chittum’s younger sister, niece and two of the niece’s friends piled into the car to go to the local fair for the Fourth of July. Chittum and Rogers’ three year old, Rebecca was unable to come due to a lack of space in the car. While driving to the fair however, Chittum lost control of his car and crashed into an oncoming tractor-trailer. Everyone involved in the accident was killed, while Chittum and Rogers left behind a three-year-old girl.
Possibly the most horrific part about this particular collision is that it was caused by a human, yet the effects were just as disastrous as a collision caused by bad weather. While a church youth group was returning from an amusement park in an activity bus, a black truck entered the freeway going the wrong direction, being driven by a man under the influence of alcohol. The ensuing head-on collision with the activity bus disabled the bus’ primary door and caused it to become engulfed in flame. 27 of the 66 passengers died, while Mahoney, the driver of the truck, was sentenced to 16 years in jail.
