More gales and heavy rain are set to hit the UK as the Environment Agency warns of further significant disruption from floods in southern England. Many rivers remain swollen after storm damage caused power cuts and travel delays. More than 50 flood warnings are in place for England and Wales.

For Rona Amiss, since the age of three all she wanted to be was a farmer. It was a career no-one else in her family had ever undertaken but one Mrs Amiss was determined to achieve. "I always wanted to be a farmer. You have to have big ambitions or else you won't get anywhere.

FORMER NFU sugar board chairman John Hoyles is among a number of farming industry figures to be recognised in the New Year's Honours list. Mr Hoyles, who farms at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, has been awarded the MBE for services to agriculture and the local community.
